Why the hell are you still wasting time and money visiting the US when you can be jailed or detained for weeks? If you feel like visiting North America, visit Mexico, Canada or any other of the countries in the continent that will likely accept your money and don’t treat you like a criminal.

Overstaying a visa is illegal. Thats why they have defined lengths.

Next year’s World Cup will be more “interesting” off the pitch than on it, probably.

Dude needs to get his girlfriend out of there and to Ireland so she can live in a democracy again

White foreigners finally being treated as foreigners.
No more “oh he’s anglo white so he is not a foreigner he is one of us”. Very fair indeed.

Nice story from an Irish man who missed his flight due to health problems and then exceeded the validity of his Visa by three days.
Arrested, he immediately agreed to be deported, unfortunately in the meantime Trump took office and he spent 100 days in prison in various ICE institutes and even in a federal prison because they were interchangeable.

>overstay for three days
>force him to overstay for months as a consequence
I don’t think the math checks out for them

What is it about people not understanding the rules if you overstay your VISA then you’re illegal.

Local police dont enforce immigration laws.
So, why was he stopped and by whom?

This is one where you actually need to read the article. In short ICE is absurdly inefficient and jumping the gun but the guy is in the wrong.
1. He gets injured
2. Doctor informs him not to fly.
3. He contacts all authorities but did not hear back from them.
4. He has a mental health episode with results in someone phoning the police and ending in his arrest.
5. His girlfriend who was the ‘victim’ did not support the arrest or the charges.
6. He gets released on bond.
7. He tries to go home.
8. He is rightfully stopped due to recent law enforcement conflict and overstaying his visa.
9. He is then subject to an absurd run around where he clearly isn’t being processed correctly and due to overcrowding is forced to go into a standard prison system alongside real world criminals.
10. He’s finally discharged after over a 100 days with a 10 year ban on entering the USA.
Not defending ICE, not making excuses for him. There’s just a tad more than the headline initially implies.

Thomas, a tech worker and dad from Ireland, overstayed by three days for health reasons, did everything right—and ended up in grim detention for over three months. If that’s how they treat a straight‑arrow tourist, what chance does anyone else have?

>Despite immediately agreeing to deportation when he was first arrested, Thomas remained in Ice detention after Donald Trump took office and dramatically ramped up immigration arrests.
Trump admin: we ask all people here illegally to self deport right now!!
Random Irishman: can I be deported?
Trump admin: lol no.

This is absolutely atrocious. What a read. NOBODY should have to suffer such conditions as described in that article… let alone a tourist who overstayed a few days due to a medical situation and alerted the authorities about it…
I just saw I’m Still Here this last weekend, the new film about the military dictatorship in Brazil in the 70s. Reading this was like watching the film all over again.

And how much did it cost the US government to imprison this man for months in stead of just making sure he took the first available flight back to Ireland?
