No surprise this is coming now. We’ve had 7/8 years of an ideal financial climate to address our infrastructural woes (due to either bumper tax receipts or 0% ECB loans) – and we completely let it pass us by.
Now that the economic skies are looking more gloomy – the government is finally talking about infrastructure. This is no coincidence; they’re anticipating a downturn and will then use that as an excuse to pause significant investment in infrastructure. They’ll then say “we tried but it’s been taken out of our hands”. Basically they want an excuse to continue to do nothing, and this rhetoric is nothing more than window dressing and arse covering.
As pretty much everyone else has said: ‘why now? Why not 20 years ago?’.
Old Simpson reference aside seriously why not sooner. Also based on the speed (and cost) of the Dublin metro, bus corridors and even grid improvements are at right now, I don’t think there will be much done without planning reform.
He could start by firing half the unelected and largely useless planners in the country, and having the Dail take back responsibility for approving critical infrastructure.
I’m going to take a judicial review of his decision and kill the whole plan. Sorry everyone.
Don’t forget this is the man who still oversees a passenger cap on the islands biggest airport.
The Metro is going to cost close to 20 billion before it is complete. There won’t be any other infrastructure as long as that is top of the list.

This is what you should be doing during a recession, but my concern is that building infrastructure in this country is so laughably expensive that we won’t be able to build all that much.
So much money is going to get invested into stuff that will never break ground.
