So we’re giving special protections to islam? That is extremely dangerous.

Christopher Hitchens warned us about ‘Islamaphobia’ years ago and now here we are

Regardless of the religion. Making rules for something totally made up is utterly insane.

The philosophy nerd in me–who finds the defining of terms intriniscally interesting–is curious about what they’ll come up with

    5. davinist on

It’s less the actual definition that might be applied than the interpretation of the definition. If even a little ambiguous, there’ll be attempts to stretch the definition to use it as a blasphemy law.

      It’s creeping religious influence.

    6. CrustyBappen on

Wow labour. It already feels taboo to speak up against some of the problems we face in society that come with Islam.

They really do want a reform term, don’t they?

    7. Neat_Owl_807 on

I must have missed that bit in the Labour manifesto. Here’s an idea. Spend your efforts on the promises that got you elected

Public criticism and rejection of any religion should be 100% guaranteed by the law. There is zero reason for any religion to get special treatment over any other. I should be free to make fun of, ridicule, criticise, object to, laugh at and generally say what I want about any religion. Is it respectful, no, but so what? Is it kind, no but so what? Is it harmful, definitely not and we are sliding into a dark place here. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this particular religion just takes, and shouts, takes, and shouts…

I wonder if they’ll do the same for Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Pagans, Wiccans, Jedi, Athiests, Scientologists, and any other groups who have beliefs or lack thereof?

    10. usernamerandom56 on

We could ask what is so special about Islam, that we as a society should have an Islamophobia law imposed on us.

Nobody is asking for a Sihkphobia law, a Hinduphobia law, a Bhuddaphobia law, Zoroastrianophonia law.

Even at the peak of free movement, when there were nearly 1 million Polish nationals in the UK, the Polish community nor lawmakers or law enforcement ever raised the issue of ” Polophobia “.

But the question isn’t what is ” special ” about Islam and its adherents.

It’s more, what is ” unique” about Islam and its adherents.

Everyone knows how this would turn out. It’s like having a card game and giving only only one player a special platinum plated trump card.

One thing the Americans have got right is they try to keep religion and politics separate? (They don’t always succeed but they do try).

We should start with getting rid of all the religious leaders in the House of lords who are there just because they are religious.

    12. CrispoClumbo on

Yep that’s fine, if we can go with Christopher Hitchens’ definition please.

We should be free to criticise Islam without being accused of racial hatred.

Do you believe in women’s rights? LGBT rights ? Are against anti semitism ? Then there is a good chance you have a phobia of Islam frankly .

    14. ryeguy3196 on

Why doesn’t labour just change their name at this point to the British Islamic Party

    15. TheInsatiableOne on

Why are we pitching a fit before it’s even happened? Can we wait for something concrete before acting like it’s the end of the world for the 3rd time this week?

A Daily Mail article about both Labour and Islam. I bet it’s very fair and balanced.

Here is my definition: this is bullshit, no religion should be shielded from criticism, being able to attack ideas is the backbone of civilization

I always wondered why it’s not called Muslimphobia.

I was against the official definition of antisemitism and as a Muslim I’m against officially defining islamophobia too. I suspect it’s more to deflect criticism that the former is given more weight.

It’s a nuanced issue. At its worst it’s a real problem as it has led to assaults, horrific verbal abuse against both adults and children and even murder. Times definitely feel unsafe for Muslims . But defining it also limits any nuance as people might feel free to dismiss the subtle stuff not covered by the definition.

The worst stuff is already covered by existing hate crime laws anyway

However I can guarantee there won’t be anything in the official definition about not being able to criticise Saudi Arabia or not being allowed to single it out when talking about its crimes. Because that would be crazy

Don’t get baited by the daily mail. A good life lesson there.

    21. ONLY_SAYS_ONLY on

If you want to see how normalised anti-Muslim bigotry is in this country, go replace the word “Islam” with “Judaism” in the spiciest comments here and see how indistinguishable they are from posts on Stormfront.

      For example:

      >Judaism is the greatest threat to the UK. Despite only making up a small minority of the population, they have already brought immense pain and suffering to huge amounts of the country. The government needs to act fast to quell the rise of Judaism, rather than bringing in blasphemy laws.

      Reddit or Stormfront?

I didn’t realise the Daily Mail was suddenly taken seriously on this sub. So in order to find out more about this, I had to read the article, so for making me dirty my hands I hope OP wakes up this morning with a hive of bees in his underwear.

This article does seem to be a lot of innuendo.

      Here’s the key passage:

      > Labour commissioned the work to devise a ‘non-statutory’ definition of Islamophobia in a what it says is a move to combat anti-Muslim abuse.

      > But there are fears it could lead to a blasphemy law by the back door and stifle legitimate criticism of Islam.

      This is it.

      Labour commissioned this committee.

And other people are having fits of the vapours for no reason at all. Including responders here who clearly didn’t read the article, or were duped by its sensationalism.

Come on, we can do better.

Btw this is the committee this article is referring to: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launches-working-group-on-anti-muslim-hatredislamophobia-definition
