The Ministry of Culture & Tourism has concluded the prolonged legal efforts to retain the Marcus Aurelius statue that was smuggled from the ancient city of Boubon in the 1960s.
Dated back to the 2nd or 3rd century CE, the statue that portrays the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius as a philosopher had changed hands for many years following its smuggling from Turkey.
The Ministry had identified that the statue was located at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and thus following a lawsuit, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the USHS Homeland Security Investigations cooperated with Turkish authorities in regards of the reacquisition of the artefact.
An official ceremony held at the museum in April formally returned the statue to Turkey – following further arrangements, it’s expected to arrive in Turkey in a few days. A special flight by Turkish Airlines will carry the artefact to Ankara, where it will meet the art enthusiasts.

Good news 🙏🏻 praying for all cultural property that got stolen off of its own lands, hopefully this becomes a thing of the past everywhere.
