Bit strange to try say the language is dying and then get rid of the only Irish most people know

Tackling the real issues facing rural Waterford people. 🙄

Should be part of the curriculum to be fair. I’m loathe to think most young children probably think “Ireland’s Call” is the anthem.

Sounds like one of those contrived culture war “scandals”

Wonderful, so progressive and proactively dynamic.

I thought it was Waterford whispers for a second. I swear the government are just doing things to wind people up and distract from the housing crisis, the children hospital and the money racket which is the IPAS centres.

To think the national anthem is not being taught in some schools is ridiculous. The government might be trying to forget but we won’t. We have a beautiful country that we should be all be proud of!! national anthem and all

Well i was at assembly in school in early 2000s and the teachers would ask what songs to sing as a group, i’d always ask for the national anthem. Most of the nerds who grew up watching Nickolodean, put their hand on their heart, like Americans. We need to be taught how to sing it correctly.

I was never taught it in school, bought a laminated poster of it in a sinn fein office in Dingle on holiday when I was about 12 and taught myself.

Take it down from the mast, Irish traitors,
‘Tis the flag we republicans claim.
It can never be owned by Free Staters
Who shed nothing upon it but shame.
Then leave it to those who are willing,
To uphold it in war or in peace,
Those men who intend to do killing
      Until England’s tyranny cease.

Funny enough I was talking about this recently with some friends I went to school with and we talked about how we couldn’t remember learning the national anthem in school.

I would know it if I heard it but I honestly couldn’t recite the words, partially of course that’s cause they’re in Irish but that’s maybe even more so the point.

Most people outside of teaching would be surprised to learn how vague curricula are. The 1999 primary curriculum and the incoming one don’t specify all that much. We assume because we all learned about the Famine in school that it’s a requirement, but it’s actually down to the teacher’s or the school’s choice.
