It’s worse than the BBC numbers let on…
– UK population grew from 65 million to 69 million between 2015 and 2025. So “vacancies per capita” are near historic lows
– Many unemployed have moved onto disability benefits due to giving up on employment. I can’t blame them with poor prospects and a higher benefit amount. So unemployment is much higher than 4.9%
The reality is we have an economy that has no opportunities, no jobs, high taxes and low pay.
Almost like putting a tax on jobs, not being able to rein in any kind of spending (especially on welfare) and making energy the most expensive in the world isn’t good for the economy
More great news,
Add that to the doctors strike and purge of mps.
They made money by taxing businesses, which hindered or stopped growth. Then failed to make any real savings.
Time for the working class and middle class specialists to cough up more, labours donors and lobbyist have said they’re unable to take the hit at the time due to wanting the new hybrid Lamborghini
Labour answer – lets tax working people more!
Reform answer – let’s give more money to non working people!
Conservative answer – …..
Green answer – communism is the answer
Lib dem – let’s rejoin eu
Don’t worry guys as Starmer said in yesterday’s PMQs. None of that matters as there are 4 million extra GP appointments
Increasing employer NI instead of basic rate of tax or employee NI was moronic.
I thought wage growth declining was a good thing for reducing inflation as cost pressure on employers and cost pressures on goods will reduce.
Hopefully the inflation rate gets back below 2% and stably stays there from 2026 as that will help hugely.
It’s tricky to see how things can get much better without economic growth and encouraging investment, startups and so on.
I’m really glad we’re starting to see some of the change we voted for……………..
Labour used to be the party for the workers.
Now its the party for anyone who doesnt work.
Considering how almost every big company can barely hide their excitement for the massive looming AI-related layoffs, the unemployment situation is about to get significantly worse and I don’t think we’re ready as a society for the terrifying impact it’s going to have.
We need to face a basic reality: a service-based economy cannot function without a large number of low-paid workers. And with birth rates declining across much of the developed world, immigration is the only realistic way to maintain the population levels necessary to keep our economies running.
At the same time, we shouldn’t bend over backwards for companies threatening to leave the country. If a business chooses to relocate because it doesn’t want to contribute to basic standards like healthcare, education, or fair taxation then frankly, good riddance. If there’s real demand for what that business offers, another company will fill the gap, and likely do so more responsibly.
If you’re profiting from the people in a country, then you also have a duty to contribute to that society. That includes paying for the infrastructure, education, and healthcare that make your workforce possible. Don’t like it? Then don’t sell here. It’s as simple as that.
There’s just 0 creativity. The state the country is in, we really needed big moves and out the box thinking. Reeves has brought little but basic bitch policies, it was never going to be enough. WFA and Welfare roll backs rather than a different approach, did they only have 1 idea for these?. Why on earth aren’t we legalising and taxing cannabis at this point? it’s such low hanging fruit, we aren’t in a position to just give that up.
We also pay an extortionate amount of money to the elderly, who were apart of the wealthiest generation who we have to bankroll because of their stupid decisions, like wtf is the triple lock about? And the winter holiday bonus? What’s next, a summer holiday bonus for pensioners?
We give nothing to the young whilst giving everything to the elderly
Reeve’s strikes again.
She’s basically as bad as Thruss, but with more goodwill of the people.
Wonder how long Labour supporters will give her the benefit of the doubt.
And this is why it’s absolutely crazy that Starmer is negotiating with the EU to restore free movement.
With rising domestic unemployment, the last thing Britain needs is a tsunami of desperate Europeans stampeding into Britain looking for a job.
As it is, we’ve already got 700,000 EU citizens claiming Universal Credit according to the figures released yesterday.
The only reason the EU is pushing for free movement is because the Single Market is failing and they want to export their unemployed to Britain.
Here are some of the EU stats:
Sweden Q1 2025 gdp: -0.2%
Sweden unemployment: 9.7%
Finland Q1 2025 GDP: 0%
Finland unemployment: 10.5%
Estonia Q1 2025 GDP: -0.3%
Estonia unemployment: 8.6%
Latvia Q1 2025 GDP: -0.1%
Latvia unemployment: 7.4%
Slovenia Q1 2025 GDP: -0.8%
Slovenia unemployment: 4.5%
Denmark Q1 2025 GDP: -1.3%
Denmark unemployment: 2.5%
