> In the encounter, which she filmed, one officer told her: “Mentioning freedom of Gaza, Israel, genocide, all of that all come under proscribed groups, which are terror groups that have been dictated by the government.”
> He went on to say that the phrase “Free Gaza” is “supportive of Palestine Action”, adding it was an offence “to express an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organisation, namely Palestine Action is an offence under section 12(1A) of the Terrorism Act”. The officer told her she had committed that offence.
Absolutely bonkers that saying Free Gaza could get you arrested under the Terrorism act.
Guess from now on we should chant “Freedom for Gaza”…
By the same logic, they should arrest all the Jews who think Israel is committing genocide. Noam Chomskky, Ilan Pappé (who teaches at Exeter), etc
Cheers for the repressive legislation, Tel Aviv Keith
Where are the free-speech brigade for this, or are they only out when they want to hate people?
This is a ridiculous overreach of the law, and I’m sure the police would also have other things they’d prefer to do. But if this is going to be the attitude of all forced to Palestine and Gaza, then it sounds like you can only support Israel fully and uncritically.
Next stop sale of cut watermelons to be made illegal
This is why proscribing political groups is so dangerous. The police aren’t smart enough to understand the difference between supporting a cause and supporting a particular group.
It won’t be possible to unproscribe PA at the moment but after the trials, once the individuals who are the cause of the problem are imprisoned, the government should think again about this. Whatever they think they’re achieving by proscribing PA it isn’t worth the knock on effects for everyone else.
I look forward to the London offices of Amnesty International being raided for stating that there is a genocide in Gaza, and British lawyers involved in the prosecution of Israel at the ICJ being arrested for their opinions.
Massive “I told you this would happen” to all the idiots who said proscribing Palestine action was a well thought out idea with no ulterior motives.
