“ MEPs have urged the EU to fire its antisemitism tsar over her controversial views on Gaza, which also “disturbed” fellow EU officials. 

“We believe that Ms von Schnurbein’s reputation has been so gravely compromised by these revelations that we must call for her immediate replacement. We do not make this call lightly,” said the 26 MEPs in a letter to the EU Commission, dated 16 July and seen by EUobserver. 

Katherina von Schnurbein, a German aristocrat, has been the commission’s “coordinator on combating antisemitism” for the past 10 years.

The 26 MEPs came from the centre-left Socialist & Democrats group, the liberal Renew faction, the Greens, and the Left group.

The “revelations” referred to an EU diplomatic cable, leaked by EUobserver about von Schnurbein’s briefing to EU ambassadors in Tel Aviv on 29 May, in which she denigrated EU and UN reports on Israeli war crimes in order to quash talk of sanctions.

Von Schnurbein also attacked EU staff who held charity events for Gaza for creating “ambient antisemitism”. 

The MEPs said: “We believe these statements severely harm the EU’s fight against antisemitism, and have the potential to damage the reputation of the Commission as a whole as a credible actor in this fight, in case no decisive action is taken”.

“Insinuating that facts established by these institutions [the EU foreign service and the UN] about Israel’s actions could be ‘rumours about Jews’ is wrong, dangerous, and unacceptable”, they said. 

“Framing of EU staff expressions of humanity and solidarity as fuelling antisemitism is smearing dedicated EU officials and empties the term antisemitism of meaning, undermining the fight against it,” the MEPs said.

Another one of von Schurbein’s Tel Aviv claims – that Palestinian militant group Hamas had clandestinely organised pro-Palestinian protests in Europe – was also “insulting to the hundreds of thousands of peacefully protesting European citizens, and is in no way factually substantiated,” the MEPs added.

And the MEPs noted that von Schnurbein had retweeted an “abhorrent” X post on 10 June, which described Swedish human rights activist Greta Thunberg as a Holocaust denier – indicating a wider pattern of inappropriate behaviour.” – EUObserver

Australia also has antisemitism chief who is extremely pro-Israel and who wants Australia to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism that would have seen Hannah Arendt prosecuted.

Israel is the albatros hanging around the neck of Europe.

Yes, Europe was historically antisemitic and conducted the atrocities of WW2; but one crime is not washed away by allowing another.

We need to have a deep, hard look at the racism in Europe because THAT is what caused the Holocaust and THAT is behind the support of Israels warcrimes.

Unless we “fix” our own racism, then we’ll keep repeating these idiotic and hateful actions

Seems to be a Greens/EFA + S&D thing, but only for Greens/EFA its a significant minority of MEP signing. I don’t think this goes anywhere.

@Media: I honestly think its bad practice to base a whole article on a Twitter leak and not linking it. With the paywall its basically leeching off whoever takes risks to leak stuff (in this case its not really risky as the leaker is a Greens/EFA MEP from NL)

Every day a new post showing how wasteful our bureaucracy is. Why do we need this person? Why are we financing this?

‘Anti-semitism’ really has become just ‘be a zionist or you are evil!’ at this point. And it harms more than it helps. Because they are LITERALLY playing into the WORST stereotypes when stuff like this comes out.

A few relevant facts that directly undermine the objectivity and legitimacy of letter’s claims:

* Among the arrested members of Greta Thunberg’s “Freedom Flotilla” was French MEP Rima Hassan, one of the letter’s signatories. She was detained by Israeli forces in June 2025 aboard the ship, which was attempting to illegally breach the naval blockade of Gaza. This was in violation of international law.
* The claim that widespread protests against Israel were spontaneous or lacked coordination is demonstrably false. In the UK, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC)—one of the country’s main pro-Palestinian advocacy groups—filed for a protest permit at 12:50 p.m. on October 7, just hours after Hamas began its attack and while Israeli civilians were still being massacred. This timeline was confirmed by the Metropolitan Police.
* Many protests across Europe and beyond were, indeed, led or organized by groups with clear links to Hamas or its affiliates.
* In the UK, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC)—which UK security agencies have repeatedly flagged for close ties to Hamas supporters—organized protests where participants displayed Hamas and Hezbollah flags, along with imagery celebrating the October 7 attacks, including paragliders used in the assault.
* In Germany, authorities banned demonstrations involving groups like the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, designated as a terrorist organization by Canada, and the US, for its explicit support of Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions. Similarly, Palestine Speaks has been publicly linked to Hamas advocacy and propaganda, organizing rallies that openly praised the October 7 attacks and displayed Hamas symbols.
* Across North America and Australia, groups such as Within Our Lifetime have openly praised the Hamas assault and led rallies featuring pro-Hamas messaging. Leading figures within these organizations have been documented making statements supporting Hamas’s armed actions, including its military wing

To claim, as the letter does, that pointing out these realities—we have seen with our own eyes—is “in no way factually substantiated” is a clear example of gaslighting.
