“Sorry madam, you will have to wait 3 hours at the clinic today instead of the usual 1, as the Appointments Robot incorrectly predicted that you wouldn’t show up. And that neither would 10 other people”.

Wait? They think AI can predict the future now?

    3. Middle-Cloud-4814 on

I can understand why there doing this but I don’t like the idea of information relating to medical care being fed into AI.

There is no way that this can have any negative unforeseen consequences.

“To add another layer to our unaccountability here’s an AI system that we’ll blame when your Dads cancer scan is needlessly cancelled for the third time. It’s not our fault, its the technical gremlins. I’m sure he can afford to wait.”

Why is everything called AI now? Is my pocket calculator AI? My clock? My doorbell?

Love the naysayers here saying it’s a bad idea. It is in fact a good thing they’re looking at improving operational efficiency by accounting for a certain percentage of no-shows. Using “AI” is buzzwordy of course, it’ll most likely be a simple model and not some large transformer

It’d be easier to improve DNAs (Did not attend) by making sure people actually get their appointment information. I’d say about half my missed appointments in clinics were patients who didn’t know they had an appointment.

**Me:** I’m here and on time for my appointment.

      **Admissions**: Computer says “no”.

AI isn’t really needed to solve this question, because there are some straightforward heuristics: “did we send out the details of this appointment to the patient before the appointment date?” “did we provide a functioning, manned phone line and/or email for them to reschedule or cancel if needed?” “did we provide directions to the clinic/service involved and details of what the appointment is for or did we assume the patient would be able to distinguish between cardiac diagnostics, cardiology and their blood pressure clinic (which is run by the clinical pharmacology team)?”

The HSE has a basic tech and communication problem. AI is a fun and sexy concept but a functioning electronic record system should be in place first.

Plot twist it cancels appointments not based on how much of a flake you are but actually if chat GPT thinks you’ll actually be alive for the follow up appointment by how fucked you look.

    13. brbrcrbtr on

I don’t really get how this works. Does it just send you text messages of varying severity based on your past attendance? Or does it actually cancel appointments if it thinks you won’t show up?

    14. keving691 on

Hahaha like actually go fuck yourselves. Imagine Maureen waddling into see her doctor and being told an imaginary entity predicted she wouldn’t come.

There is absolutely no reason for AI to be involved with hospitals

    15. CranberryClear2573 on

I don’t mind AI in hospitals as long as they don’t merge my fingers or alter my proportions.

    16. Too-many-Bees on

      I’m here.

AI said you wouldn’t come so we canceled your appointment. We have another one in 6 months. You better convince the robot you’ll be here for that one

    17. hmkvpews on

All I get from this is most people have no clue how AI works.

    18. Satur9es on

This is a fantastic way for a HSE with zero accountability to introduce a new barrier to accountability

    19. FinsternIRL on

I’ve show up to appointments texted AND posted to me twice in the last 5 years and no one at the hospital knew why.
