King Philippe sharply criticizes Gaza conflict in July 21st speech: “A disgrace to humanity”
“The situation in Gaza has been dragging on for far too long and is a disgrace to humanity,” King Philippe said in his traditional speech marking the national holiday on July 21st. The king believes that Europe must take a stronger stance and oppose the “brutal power struggle” in the world.
In his July 21st speech this year, King Philippe focused primarily on the various violent conflicts around the world, which continue to rage. He was particularly critical of the war in Gaza. “I join everyone who denounces the serious humanitarian abuses in Gaza, where innocent civilians, trapped in their enclave, are starving and succumbing to bombs,” he said.
“The current situation has been going on for far too long. This is a disgrace to humanity. We support the call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for an immediate end to this unbearable crisis.”
Political Coverage
King Philippe appears to be speaking out more forcefully about Gaza than the federal government, which is often more reserved in its criticism.
“But if you listen to the precise word choice, you can hear that he doesn’t use the word ‘genocide,'” says political journalist Pieterjan De Smedt. “The king is clearly outraged by what’s happening in Gaza and couldn’t really remain silent. But he also takes into account the political sensitivities in this country. When the king makes such statements, they are always approved in advance by the government.”
Europe as a strong leader
King Philippe believes that Europe “must assert its leadership even more strongly” and “must present itself as a bulwark against and a worthy alternative to the brutal power struggle we are witnessing today.”
“By remaining true to our values: democracy, justice, and law.” “International law is openly questioned today. Europe continues to choose cooperation over confrontation and opts for openness instead of exclusion. That is a remarkable, sometimes difficult choice. It also requires courage today.”
The King also speaks of Ukraine, “where the people continue to resist with extraordinary courage.” He believes it is important that we continue to support the Ukrainians. “By their struggle to preserve their sovereignty, they also protect ours.”
Need for a Brussels government
While wars and conflicts in the rest of the world are central to the speech, King Philippe also looks to his own country. And especially to Brussels, where a new government is still lacking.
“In light of all the violence and unrest plaguing the world, our own concerns may seem insignificant. Nothing could be further from the truth. They deserve our full attention and that of our elected officials. They must be addressed decisively, because they have a direct impact on the citizens of this country.”
“In Brussels, in particular, it is urgent that a new government finally gets to work.”
In these uncertain times, the Queen and I find it all the more meaningful to celebrate our national day with you.
“Not to forget what’s happening elsewhere, but to remind us who we are and what we can achieve together, as Belgians and as Europeans. Let us draw energy from this day of celebration and togetherness to face tomorrow with confidence and courage.”

I welcome this intervention, that steps outside the conventions. Breaking new ground in how we deal with Israel is essential. Its up to all of us to push our govts to use the levers available. Sanctions against Israel, divestments, boycotts. That’s all we have, and we must use these tools.
Israel deliberately killed 14000 little children in punishment for Oct 7th 2023. And it has continued massacring civilians every day since that one day. It can’t stop itself. So it must be stopped.
I advise all Europeans to get your answer to “what did you do?” ready for when the next generation of Europeans ask us.
This is about protecting innocent Palestinian civilians from genocide. We must not be distracted from that focus.

Just FYI – certain state actors are trying to conflate Anti Semitism with New Anti-Semitism
The difference being – they’re trying to force the idea that any criticism of Israeli government action or policies (domestic or international), whether justified or not, is an attack on the Jewish religion.
So – be aware of the difference.

The Belgian royalty is itching to get its Congo conscience cleaned by proxy using Israel. Brussels will be under sharia law soon so they better hurry.

It’s great too see our king standing up for what is right while our government actively blocks all action against Israel because of their business interests.
