“Phillips was unemployed and his primary motivation for wanting to become a spy for the Russian Intelligence Service was financial reward.”

So he wanted free money with nothing to offer them in return?

My guess. This guy has been bugging the Russian embassy for ages, begging to become a spy despite being a frequently unemployed hod carrier. Russian embassy finally had enough of him so him so grassed him up.

The only information this guy had was an MPs address. Which would take the Russians about 30 seconds to find independently.

In my purely speculative scenario, getting arrested probably gave the Russians more information than Howard would have been able to provide in a lifetime.

The sentencing here might be interesting. Has a maximum of life in prison, but i cant see him getting that.

Used the famously secure “what’s app” and did not talk to the MI5 agents long enough for their fake accents to slip.

I wonder if his emails to Tom Cruse were about joining the IMF or Church of Scientology 😂

If your not sat in an isolation room in the Russian embassy having your genuine conversation with the Russians recorded by the CIA then your talking to a MI5 agent. How dumb are these people?

Not a Russian spy but even I know the reds use Telegram. Infact I am assuming he was actually using Telegram but they changed the details in the reporting of the case for national security reasons. Unless MI5 really were only bottom of the barrel hunting.

What a plank. If he wanted help the Russian state, become a politician instead. Like Peter Mandelson who helped produce military radar while being a director at a Russian company and has faced zero consequences.

    6. I’m very worried about this and free speech. In a democracy anyone can claim to have secrets but should not be put in prison for that. That’s a dictatorship. he’s done nothing wrong about from trying to be a spy and never actually have any information of value.

Is Essex man our equivalent of Florida man? I’m starting to feel that it is.
