“He asked if a Government that failed to keep this promise while being responsible for the €330,000 Leinster House bicycle shed, €1.4 million Department of Finance security hut and the €2.24 billion Children’s Hospital, could be trusted to deliver a €275 billion development plan.
The Ryanair boss argued that the plan should include a nuclear power plant to help secure energy independence.”

It’s wild how his argument that the government cannot handle infrastructure projects and therefore shouldn’t try is immediately followed by: we should build a nuclear plant. Which are infamous for going over budget and over time all over the world.

      Absolute spoofer.

    2. Alastor001 on

Of course, so we are stuck driving to airport / taking taxi / spending 1 hour + on a bus to get from say Heuston station

“He argued that no one could go to Stephen’s Green at 4am, “where there is nowhere to park” to catch trains to the airport.”

Has this gobshite considered that people taking a metro to the airport are probably not driving in the first place?

I think we’ve all known that Michael O’Leary is full of bullshit. Trace back any of these “hot takes” from him and you’ll find he stands to gain from not having it.

The reality is that he knows that Dublin is expanding north of the airport, a metrolink will facilitate this and people will start living closer and more densely to the airport. This will inevitably limit the potential of dublin airport to run late night flights or to expand in the future.

    5. Says the man that runs/ran his own private taxi company with onotaxi so he can drive in the bus lanes

    6. HibernianMetropolis on

That’s grand Michael, you can just run short haul flights from the airport to land on O’Connell street

He’s a muppet. He believes what he says is gospel and Irish media lap his takes up.

Newspapers shouldn’t be slobbering over the machinations of millionaires.

When he makes a statement like that, there’s always a sneaky loco motive behind it..

    10. No_Deal_8837 on

This is not a train to the airport..the airport is just one of many stops on a train route

Ask his staff juggling suitcases on e-scooters on busy roads in the wind and rain in January if it’s not needed.

    12. Intelligent-Lunch438 on

Obviously trying to protect the income Ryanair make from selling Aircoach tickets.

Remember, this is the same man who signed off on a media statement saying staff do not get a commission for identifying passengers with oversized bags, (he is very hands on, so nothing happens there without him knowing it).only to then go on TV this week saying they do.

You cannot believe a word he or Ryanair say.

    13. Bill_Badbody on

He is really an amazing dickhead. He will speak out of both sides of his mouth.

He gives out about the limitations on and in Dublin airport, while dragging the airport to court as he doesn’t want to.pay a fee to cover the construction of a tunnel.under the runway.

He had had one good idea in his career, and its made him very rich. That doesn’t make him smart.

    14. ExternalAd9994 on

I would really like to never hear his opinion on anything ever again

    15. BlueBucket0 on

Maybe not basing public transport policy on the hot takes of a budget airline CEO might be an idea.

Dublin Airport is one stop on the line.

    16. I wish this stupid reactionary cunt would shut the fuck up and stop subjecting us to his moronic takes.

    17. brbrcrbtr on

Who asked him and why should we care what an airplane man thinks about the metro

    18. susanboylesvajazzle on

When it comes to running a successful low-cost airline, I’ll happily listen to the opinions of Michael O’Leary.

When it comes to anything else, I’d be as well listening to the local pub bore.

    19. whooo_me on

Cool! Cork’ll happily take a rail link to the airport if Dublin doesn’t want it.

The 1st and 3rd busiest airports in the country are due to get rail connectivity, it’s weird that the 2nd busiest is left out.

    20. bubbleweed on

Every single utterance and action Michael O’Leary makes is to further the profit of Ryanair and himself and absolutely not a thing else.

    21. dkeenaghan on

      > Mr O’Leary noted that the proposed line had no connections to the city’s other public transport including buses and Luas trams.

The man is clearly an idiot when it comes to public transport. Which is bizarre, it’s not like it competes with his business, it just makes it easier for his customers to get to their flight.

The metro will have the following connections to rail public transport, there will be buses near every stop because there’s buses everywhere in Dublin, particularly the central area.

      * Green Luas at Charlemont, and be close to St.Stephen Green Luas
      * Dart at Tara St
      * Red Luas at O’Connell St, with the Green close
      * Dart+ West and Southwest and train services on the Sligo line at Glasnevin.

Additionally the main point of MetroLink is not to provide public transport to the Airport. It is to service the large population of people that live/work/play all along the route between the city centre and Swords. The idea that no one will use the line is beyond stupid.

He was against terminal two as well. Imagine the airport without terminal two?

    24. We just can’t see the big picture. He’s a few shipping containers and a bus park away from a new hub in Baldonnel.

    25. Witty_Management2960 on

Just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he’s smart. Just a self-centered prick who thinks he’s always right. Could almost guarantee this Metro will somehow impact him financially in some way, hence why he’s shooting it down. Dublin CITY needs additional commuter options yo and from the airport. When visiting other cities, almost every time, I would use the rail system to get into a central location, where most hotels for visiting tourists are located.

But no, Michael, you’re absolutely right. The only people using the link would be 60+ year old Irish people who will have to have somewhere to park the KIA. Feck off.

      Yes it’s needed.

The man who claimed that Terminal 2 was a waste of money…

    28. Harrykeough1 on

He also said back at the time of the financial crash in 2008 that Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport wasn’t needed either!

    29. Mr-Mystery20 on

He knows that if metrolink is constructed, it will unlock some serious and large housing developments around the Blake’s cross lissenhall region which would effect his airport capacity/ expansion plans

    30. Stefanie1983 on

“You can’t park there at 4 am to catch a train tonthe airport” I remember needing to go to the airport at 4am and had to take a taxi because there were no buses… funny.

    31. svmk1987 on

Just so that everyone remembers: airport connectivity is not the sole purpose of Metrolink. It is a very good reason to do it, but not the only reason.

Swords is perhaps the largest town around Dublin with no rail connectivity at this distance, which accounts for very poor public transport usage in the area (despite having their own bus service swords express). Swords rail connectivity has been an old long standing important goal for public transport improvement in Dublin.

Metrolink also brings fast connectivity to huge areas of north Dublin like santry and ballymun, which have chronic traffic issues from M1 and avoiding the crazy expensive tunnel toll, and increases capacity of the overcrowded green line (which will get better when it eventually expands south).

    32. Alien_711 on

It would benefit him to have more transport to the airport? He has some mouth to say bs like that

    33. --0___0--- on

Metrolink not needed- says man who owns taxi company and profits off no metrolink.

      Not surprised.

    34. Glum-Inflation-4851 on

He makes a fair point though that the proposed route doesn’t connect with other parts of the rail network in context to replacing the existing bus services.

Like if I were in Dublin Airport and wanted to travel to Cork, Limerick, Galway, I’d expect the network to connect me pretty seamlessly to Heuston Station. Whereas the proposed route would require me to get off at O’ Connell Street and get the Luas out to Heuston.

Like yeah, it still connects, but if we’re throwing that much into a new metro, surely having it connect to the station that serves the rest of the country would be one of the bigger priorities.
