When I had no income and boomers were making a bomb, it was a per household charge.

Now I have an income and they are rich as creases, suddenly it will be income based.

No thanks, I’m tired of being asked to pay multiple times. I’m done.

They will overhaul it in a way that gets us to pay more tax or subsidise more people, not in a good way. Council tax is already too high, we need to streamline spending and stop pissing money away on things that don’t need doing first.

Like my council has an endless supply of cash for changing road layouts and adding obstacles to roads but never seeems to have cash for improving services. The priorities are wrong.

I support tourist levies though. Nearly every country I travel to has them, so we should be doing the same.

It’s kind of bullshit that stamp duty goes to the central government but council tax goes to the council. But because stamp duty can be so expensive, council tax is more regressive to compensate which means councils get less funding. Reduce or abolish stamp duty, have a percentage based property tax that only property owners pay. Not tenants.

What is funny to me is that I’d not travel within UK for tourism for the extortionate train fares and accomodation prices. It’s cheaper to get an easyJet and go overseas.
Who is actually visiting UK for tourism?

I looked into it, and it’s Spanish French and Italian with most tourists and London is the most visited place.

More reason not to work …. soon the middle class are those who choose not to work, who bought their council house at 50% off then sold it full price 5 years later. Then they bought shared ownership and get housing benefits to pay the “rent” section of their shelter cost along with gaining PIP with it’s enhanced universal credit, cold weather payments, their cheaper broadband and tv packages, brand new car every 3 years, minimal council tax and kids diagnosed with every combination of letters you can think of, by a diagnosis made over the phone which opens up more money taps so their PIP goes into the parents pockets too along with the carers allowance.

Council tax desperately needs an overhaul and has done for years

Combine with income tax – then councils are gonna have to justify, for once, large expenses that ‘may’ actually be a good idea but aren’t.

Right now, councils simply spend what they want, when they want to, knowing there’s a steady income. Plus, these fuckers make sure their own studies (for projects) predict this, that or the other.

Replacing council tax with a land value tax would actually be brilliant. Council tax is super regressive, while land value tax is much fairer. It would also incentivise more house building and reduce the power of landlords to exploit tenants.

A base rate lvt which goes to central government and devolved power to councils to set their own local rates on top would be fantastic

I’ll tell you how they can get more money. Tax the houses that are sitting empty. If you bought a house and just let it sit there you will pay 10x the tax unless it is undergoing renovation which makes it unsafe to live in. End the idiocy of buying houses purely for investment. If you want to fix your wealth to assets, buy some art or cars.

      Say it with me

      LAND VALUE TAXES

It incentivises density and people paying appropriate tax based on the value of the place.

It also disincentivises land banking or people sitting on empty properties and doing nothing with them.

(although I do also support tourist levies)

Tourist taxes should not be allowed for a number of reasons.
      1) Why should access to culture be restricted to those fortunate enough live there?
      2) A lot of the things tourists visit locations for are funded through the Government’s Consolidated fund which we all contribute towards through tax so why should we be charged again?

    12. We need a swoop of radical changes to our tax policies.

Replace council tax with a property tax of 0,2%. End stamp duty. Introduce wealth tax of 2% over £10M. Raise tax thresholds for working people. Equalise capital gains rates with income tax rates. Eliminate NI for both employees and employers. Raise fuel levy. Abolish WFA. End the triple lock. Introduce a window of business tax relief for entrepreneurs. Means-test PIP. Reset the energy price index to a mix-base rather than just gas. Introduce zonal planning laws.

Everyone will find something to love and something to hate. But broadly it’s a fairer system.
