EU demands ‘explanations’ on Ukrainian reforms, says ‘no compromise’ on corruption
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen asked Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for explanations on the controversial reform weakening the country’s anti-corruption agencies, her spokesperson said.

Von der Leyen “conveyed her strong concerns about the consequences of the amendments,” her spokesperson said, adding that she requested “explanations” about the change.

The EU is “very concerned” about the adoption of the new law, which it said “risks weakening strongly the competences and powers of anti-corruption institutions of Ukraine.”

      They added:

“The respect for the rule of law and the fight against corruption are core elements of the European Union.

As a candidate country, Ukraine is expected to uphold these standards fully. There cannot be a compromise.”

“EU is concerned” is translated as “we dont give a shit but we must write this formal letter”

    3. I thought that Ukraine wanted to get into EU or at least european support, and for that, they needed to get corruption under control… and now a U-turn away from it all

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced, following significant criticism, that the independence of anti-corruption agencies will be maintained. He stated that he will present a new draft law to parliament, as mentioned in his evening address. Zelensky assured that “all standards for the independence of anti-corruption agencies will be upheld.”

Reported by the German newspaper Zeit.

The EU, my country Germany, support Ukraine. Not certain politicians or parties, but the country, ultimately the *Ukrainian people.*

This is what the military and financial aid is truly about, to support the Ukrainian people to defend themselves against a brutal and illegal war of aggression.

The prospect of Ukraine joining the EU must also be seen in that context – Ukraine is given a realistic path to eventually join the EU. But for that to happen, it will need to fulfil certain criteria that ultimately are also to the benefit of the Ukrainian people, strengthening democracy and transparency, having a civilising effect on the Ukrainian political and judicial system.

*That’s* why we support Ukraine. The sacrifices of the Ukrainian people should not – and will not – be in vain.

Ukrainian anti-corruption bureau was caught on corruption, so they were investigated by SBU, but in peace times- they can’t investigate them, so the main prosecutor has a right to investigate them. Dunno what are people yelling about getting down the anti-corruption bureau.
