People are responding the way they are because your question can easily open the door for someone to basically come out and start shitting on Bulgaria. And there are definitely folks on this sub who are just waiting for an excuse.
But I digress. Simply put, your question(IMO) has 2 answers and they’re connected.
Living conditions here are objectively not the best, and they were worse 30 years ago. A good number of people left to look for greener pastures.
This brings us to the second part – a good part of the population here heavily glorifies anything that is foreign. Some people think they’ll just have this amazing life thrown their way the second they cross the border. So while some people absolutely left for very legit plans and reasons, many just thought if they couldn’t hack it here, they’d prosper just by going elsewhere. Doesn’t usually work out like that, but serves to increase the number of outbound travellers.
