I need someone with a better understanding to ELI5, but if she is losing her €244 PW(~€12k pa) because she got married and is now jointly assessed, isn’t that fairly significantly offset by the tax credits she will be giving to her partner?

Missed opportunity to argue for specific proposals that might actually have popular support. Blanket cancellation of the means test isn’t one.

    3. No sympathy – there’s a huge tax break for one member of a married couple working part time.

“A measly €12 a week increase” that’s a lot more of an increase than many people got in their wages each week. Unbelievable entitlement.

I’ve read through the comments but not playing devil’s advocate but those that are married end up relying on their partner. It does remove independence from them

If she wanted to keep his benefit, it was such a big deal and was smart,

      She wouldn’t have got married.

I’d encourage people to look into partial capacity benefit and invalidity pension. I know it’s not the same but in my time at citizens information people are not being informed of these payments and are eligible in some cases. Both are not means tested but do require you having worked for a bit of time so see if they suit you before checking them out.

    7. The government’s total expenditure on social welfare (all social protection measures) for 2023 was approximately €63.5 billion. Studies in Ireland indicate that a meaningful UBI (e.g., €208/week, similar to basic social welfare rates) would cost about €37 billion; a higher payment like €1,200/month (€277/week) would cost about €50 billion. Could retain existing civil servants and retrain to focus on fighting poverty and homelessness, it would add to the cost but pay back in a few generations.

Load of freaks on this thread. Disabled people should be able to get married without losing their allowance, marriage isn’t some kind of silver bullet for disabled people. “She shouldn’t have gotten married” would you say that to a non disabled person? Everyone wants to moan about disability and welfare until it comes to their door, then they’d be the first ones crying about the government not looking after them. Saps

“My family unit can now sustain itself but I still want the money the government was giving me to be able to sustain myself”

The economic independence statement is bullshit he was dependent on the state, now on the partner. The disability, dis-ability, lack of ability, on the name should have been a hint. Being dependent is the core of it.

      Pure entitlement.
