i wasn’t even planning on striking initially until Wes started running his mouth going and implicitly threatening us.

Guy should have stayed quiet rather than trying to instigate Drs

If you aren’t in a low paid job then wages have collapsed since 2008. It will be interesting to see if this idea of “pay restoration” catches on.

Good thing I got out of hospital just a couple days ago. It was already a slow nightmare waiting for the doctors to do what they need to do to keep things moving, can’t imagine how it’s gonna be for folks inside now.

Good move from Wes & Keir to piss-off highly skilled, highly mobile, highly educated young professionals. Another thing our country is definitely doing right. We are a resurgent Great Britain.

    5. Over 60000 NHS staff are being made redundant due to a lack of money, but these doctors keep coming back for more and more and more.

I guess Bevan was correct when he founded the NHS; the only way to get Doctor’s to support the NHS is to stuff their mouths with gold.

good, they deserve what the are asking for. as a student nurse i see how hard resident doctors work – good luck!

I got my face cut open outside a pub on new years during a doctor’s strike.

      Not great timing.

There were a few doctors on duty who didn’t really know how to stitch. One gave up half way through before another enthusiastically offered to have a go.

I’ve still got noticeable scarring from the bad dozen or so stitches.

Good luck everyone. Make sure not to do get attacked or have any accidents for the next week.

Good for them. The government can afford whatever it wants when it suits them.

We should be supporting each other and all striving for better pay and conditions. Instead of the obscene wealth inequality we have now and this bizarre obsession with wanting to drag and beat people down.

Cost of settling the Doctors strikes: £2 billion. Unaffordable. Politically impossible.

Cost of maintaining the pension triple-lock next year: An extra £5 billion. Perfectly affordable. Politically savvy.

If we can afford the winter cruise allowance we can afford to give doctors a salary that’s higher then the doctors assistants

      Pay the Doctors.

Just a reminder that the government found £11.7 billion for the overseas climate budget, £3.4 billion to give away the Chagos Islands and are currently spending £8 million a day on migrant hotels for undocumented adult males who have travelled from France.

The money is there, it’s just about priorities. Choices have to be made, I’d rather my taxes be spent on Doctors.

In what world is an assistant paid more and claim it’s fair? Media keeps throwing 28% pay rise, feel the BMA should be throwing PA getting paid more as the first response

    13. What the doctors are demanding would cost the public roughly 1 billion pounds (slightly opaque, so if anyone has a more accurate number, please let me know). A penny on income tax raises 6.9 billion pounds, so this pay rise could be achieved with 0.142p added to the basic rate. This would cost the median earner about 3 pounds per month.

Does this really sound like an amount of money worth getting into a protracted battle with the doctors over? Frankly, I would be happy to forgo a cup of coffee per month to end this, especially if a compromise deal was made and I only lost out on an espresso.

We are already facing a crisis with enormous waiting lists and a sick population. Pushing more of our best and brightest overseas or into the private sector, while we very slowly train replacements and cover strike actions with senior or agency staff, will cost us more in the long term.

    14. I never begrudge anyone striking to get their coin, but i do think this is bad timing. Once the public is against you its uphill from here.

    15. LowWing563 on

      Fully support these.

How can you think it’s okay for doctors to be paid less today than they were in 2008? People wonder why they’re leaving but they get abuse when they try to get better conditions

    16. TavernTurn on

My perspective on this has changed. At first I thought they were being short-sighted doing this. But there are 4 more years of this government and quite frankly, I would prefer my taxes rose to enable pay restoration for all NHS staff if it meant the NHS getting back on track. Good luck to all striking workers today!

I’m not particularly happy with doctors striking but if the government can find the money to restore winter fuel payments to a bunch of greedy pensioners who don’t need it then they can afford to pay public sector workers better. Labour should accept they are not getting reelected and start making the best choices for the country rather than worrying about trying to please the voter base (old people).

    18. Past_Humor8321 on

God bless the doctors. You are our angels of life 😇 .

    19. Desperate_Caramel_10 on

We’re taking the piss as a nation that we’ll allow someone to keep hundreds of thousands of pounds profit from the sale of a primary residence without taxing it but we won’t let doctor’s pay keep up with inflation.

    20. iameverybodyssecret on

I agree they should be paid more but isn’t this punching down rather than up? Rich people will have private health care anyway. Only the working classes will suffer as a result.

    21. KookyEntertainment88 on

Starting pay for most jobs is low, that’s the reality unfortunately. Would you be happy for tax rises and NI rises to fund this? I’m all for everyone getting paid what they feel they should, but not sure where the money is going to come from. Reduce benefits? That didn’t go down well.

They signed up knowing what the starting salary is, unlike most jobs, they will end up being paid quite alot, look at GP wages. etc.

Let them protest and negotiate, but like the army and police, they are putting life’s at risk, so should not be allowed to strike.

    22. Mrmrmckay on

Lol Wes “we got it all sorted” Streeting is seeing it’s much easier to snipe from the sidelines than it is to be in charge 😄

    23. qaz122333 on

They just accepted a new pay deal in September after striking. If they weren’t happy with it they shouldn’t have accepted. It’s the fact that they are striking less than a year after agreeing a new pay deal that’s going to upset most people – and yes, in a family with 3 NHS doctors.
