Nobody cares when it’s kids who’s parents don’t care. Unfortunately.

So much of life is a lottery.

May these poor kids rest in peace.

    3. >The case of the 17-year-old who took her own life had been allocated to a Tusla social worker and had been the subject of many discussions between the HSE and Tusla regarding who was responsible for keeping the young person safe.

Irish state agencies passing the buck rather than accepting shared responsibility isn’t a surprise.

What the *fuck* kind of ragebait is this headline?

      >None of the 19 deaths related to children in care, two related to young people receiving aftercare services and the remaining 17 related to children or young people who were living with their families in the community and who had had some involvement with Tusla during their lives.

My mother works in child protection for Tusla, and one of her biggest frustrations is the lack of suitable foster placements and the understaffing across welfare services. I wonder how many of these deaths might have been prevented if these services were better resourced and children had received the right interventions. It’s heartbreaking listening to her talk about her job because so many children just never get any chance at having a decent life and just fall through the cracks

      “Known to Tusla”.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that any child in a riskier home situation or with mental health issues, would become known to Tusla.

In fact, I feel like it being **only** 19 tells us that we’re not very good at detecting at-risk children.

This whole area sorely needs a massive injection of funding. Tusla only have a fraction of what they actually need to function.

      This is utter bullshit.

      >Eight children died as a result of natural causes, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Four died by suicide, two were accidental tragedies and there is no conclusion as to cause of death for the remaining five.

In other words, we can definitely state that Tulsa was in no way at fault for 8 of the 19, and unlikely to be at fault for 2 of the remaining 11. This leaves 9 dead children (and a reminder here that “children” covers everyone from newborn infant to 17 years, 364 days old). Of these 9, four died by their own hand, and the remaining 5 are open cases. So, at absolute *worst*, Tulsa is partly responsible for less than half the number of deaths listed.

When the government next push for punishments for spreading misinformation, can we try and add something to make bullshit click-bait headlines illegal as well?

Jesus Christ this is awful. I dread to think what we might learn in a few years. The state has never been good at looking after the most vulnerable members of our society

If Tusla try to take some child away from their scumbag parents the parents, the courts, the media etc fight them every inch of the way.

If Tusla don’t take some child away form their scumbag parents they are dragged for not doing enough and not being fit for purpose. Despite them being extremely underresourced.

      Thankless job.

It’s likely TUSLA weren’t responsible, in full or in part, for any of these deaths. But that doesn’t mean that lessons can’t be learned to prevent similar deaths with more intervention.

As someone who’s worked with children – it’s growing increasingly incredibly frustrating to deal with Tusla over the last 5 years.

Ive had cases where social workers refuse to do house visits or answer phone calls – or even get int touch with any organisations working with the child.

I’ve had children with no social work involvement and no contact made by Tusla – yet I’ve made several child protection notices and just get told “they’re being reviewed” when I contact to follow up.

      It’s not okay.

      Tusla are dicks.

My cousin’s mother kicked her out when she was 14, yet tusla had the nerve to say her mother loved her to the 14 year old. Imagine being told that, at 14, after ur mother locks u out in the rain and says she doesn’t want to see u again. I’ve no respect for tusla after that.
