“Under the plan, some $9.7 million worth of implant and IUD contraceptives stored in Belgium are reportedly set to be incinerated in France.”
What a sodding waste. The French left are right these should be snagged before they are burnt

If whatever agency owns them is going to just incinerate them anyway, it’s purely ideological. They could undoubtedly be donated to a completely health focused, neutral aid agency, even if they’re withdrawing from the programmes that they were supporting. Incinerating them is just a bizarre waste of millions.

Unfortunately, you’re going to see the usual hallmarks of extreme Christian fundamentalism baked into U.S. policy under the MAGA crowd.
It’s a waste of resources, but likely just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their impact on development aid. They’ll see it as a tool for evangelism and driving hardcore religious agendas, much as you already see with some religious charities – aid with strings attached, used to push religious and ideological agendas in vulnerable places.
Development aid will just become a state funded Christian missionary programme.

Are these contraceptives owned by the US? If they are, it is completely within the US’ right to destroy them. Of course it is immoral, but that does not give other countries the right to involve themselves in this decision. Of course, France would be free to offer to buy them, but anything more than that is frankly not France’s role

It’s bloody insane that this is even up to debate. Whether you think sex should belong within marriage or otherwise, I think it’s undeniable that we all benefit from contraceptions whether the woman is married or not. If she is married, she will have only an optimal number of children to care for and caring for several children whom she and her husband can’t afford is a nightmare. If she is unmarried, she will not have children out of wedlock which is something that I thought that everyone including conservatives want to support as well.
Why are they doing this? Who is benefiting from it? What is the gain?
