Note: Although numbers like 911, 112, or 999 may connect to emergency services in countries such as Australia or Canada, they are not the officially designated emergency numbers in those countries.

In Germany 110 is for police and 112 for the fire department. So both apply I suppose.

In most european countries calling 911 will auto-redirect your call to 112. And in Canada and most US states, calling 112 will auto-redirect your call to 911.

Not really sure why the map marks out the Ireland and the UK. Both have long, long established use of 999, but both also have been amongst the best implementations of 112.
Most European countries have other national emergency numbers, some, notably France, dragged their feet on 112 much more so than either Ireland or Britain.
Ireland actually advertises 112 on emergency vehicles, but it’s never intended to outright replace 999, just coexist with it, as 999 is seared into cultural memory it’s been around for so long.
While 112 is known and supported and redirects to the next police station, nobody uses it.

In Poland there’s way more than merely 112, there are legacy 997 (Police) and 998 (Firefighters), which are currently just an alias for 112 – Centrum Powiadamiania Ratunkowego, CPR (public-safety answering point), but there’s also well known 999 which connects directly to Medical Emergency Center and then there’s also plethora of less known:
983 – veterinary emergency services
984 – water rescue services (sea, lake, river drowning rescue)
985 – sea and mountain rescue services
986 – municipal police (not in all cities)
987 – crisis management centre (natural disasters, but also i.e. industrial disasters)
989 – National Health Fund telephone information service
991 – energy emergency services (electricity)
992 – gas emergency services (natural gas pipeline system)
Just because the unified 112 emergency number has been agreed upon EU-wide it doesn’t mean that it’s completely implemented everywhere. In Italy, because the health system is managed by the regional governments, not all regions have completed to connection of the health emergency response systems to the 112. Others might have done it just very recently, with improvements still to be made.

Idk if there is a technical reason or convention but 111 or 100 makes it easier to remember, especially when you are under stress or worse, gravely injured. Some people also panic and can’t keep their cool. I had situations where I needed to call for ambulances, thankfully for others and not myself but I could see how distressed they were and unable to…well think rationally.

Everyone going “actually we have numbers for specific things” yeah no shit it’s not special to your country. 112 is not supposed to remove all the other numbers, just a way to harmonise and standardise it not be the only one

poland is
999 – ambulance
998 – fire department
997 – police
112 will get you to a dispatcher who can then redirect you to the other as needed.
calling the individual numbers is better however as you will get contacted with the specific professional of that department, eg. caling 998 you will be contacted with a firemen who can offer you instructions in case of specific situations eg. the general dispatcher wouldnt know what to do in case of a chemical fire, but a firemen would.
112 is good when you have a combined emergency eg. major car crash that requires ambulance for the injured and firemen for the fire, but if you only need one of those contacting the individual number is better
EDIT: Note, in some but not all regions the individual numbers might redirect you to 112 instead, thats regrettable as 997/998/999 offered more specialised help and 112 dispatcher is obviously not going to have all of the skills of a fireman, police officer, and a medical responder at once.

– Various special numbers starting with 116:
– 116 000 – Missing child
– 116 006 – Victims of crime
– 116 111 – Child helpline
– 116 123 – Emotional support helpline
– VHF channel 16 – generally for maritime emergencies over the radio.

While of course I’m not going to test it, I did not know 112 works in the UK & Ireland.
There must be somewhat of a risk of misdial in England, Wales, and Scotland, though, because 111 is our non-emergency medical number. The 111 service unfortunately doesn’t exist in NI, so they’re excluded.

In Lithuania, you can’t call any number other than 112 – nothing else works anymore for a while.
Was implemented fully like 10-15+ years ago, redirection worked till 2022.
