In the article they’re talking about 19 cats drown this year in Amsterdam. Now comes to controversy, I believe cats belong indoors or let them out on a leash (like dogs). Not because I don’t like them, but because of their hunting instinct. Every year, cats catch a significant number of birds and other small wild animals. This is undesirable when endangered species are involved.

I honestly doubt that many cats will be saved from drowning with these stairs and the people who fall in and drown will certainly not be saved, because they are too drunk/drugged to swim to a staircase. It’s a nice idea that will probably not have the desired impact.

The only wildlife I found near an Amsterdam canal was a British tourist puking her guts out and whom I prevented from drowning while being high as a kite myself.
And on a more serious note, what kind of wildlife there is in these canals?
