Is the issue so much significant in Italy, to actually garner such unified support? Like, wtf?

Likely unconstitutional law as it just adds extra years in prison if the homicide is against a woman.
No actual initiatives to prevent or combat the “issue”, which is overblown anyway but important to bring up.
Likely accelerated by the killing of a 14yo from a 19yo guy that couldn’t let her go.
This government is champion of pretending to do something once an issue gets to many instagram feeds, without actually doing anything.

As an Italian, here’s what i think is going to happen:
– The law is going to be applied and enforced for everyone for a few months before corruption sets in
– Every poor criminal who did commit femicide will shit their pants until judges realize they can be paid to think of the woman as a man
– Every case that regards the killing of a man will become “routine” and won’t be treated as importantly as femicide for a good while
Personally this law doesnt make much sense since judges are still corrupt and will treat femicide as any other type of killing (or outright ignore it) if paid well enough. Im sure that whoever had the idea to put this law in motion got traumatized by the news of boyfrienda killing their girlfriends and decided to target those type of individuals while ignoring the fact that the constitution says that everyone should be treated equally regardless of gender and race. What a bunch of shitheads.
Im all for women to be important and independent as i myself am a sort of feminist, but putting one gender above the other especially when it comes to murder is utter bullshit.

Just propaganda. If they actually wanted to introduce a new crime (or rather, a new punishment to an old crime) they could have just sanctioned both men and women whenever they kill a partner or ex partner. This would have led to the same exact effect, with the only difference that they couldn’t call it “femicide”.
In any case, this is an extremely dangerous use of criminal law, as this new law was mostly driven by political propaganda rather than by a well thought social, political, and legal argument.
It’s politics. Few hundred homicides ( homo meaning human race but for our politicians this is too far fetched to understand ) while a tragedy per se is not that high considering the nearly 60 million people we have in our Country.

Murdered women is an issue, but the real issue it’s not their gender nor the fact that they are killed by their husbands and exes, but murders happen at all, even for males, children and elderly people.
It’s not like that therr are A-list Victims and B-list victims just for media sensation.
I had to re-read that headline twice as it initially sounded like a bill introducing gender-based assassination .
Femicide is the equivalent of a tiktok trend yet will make it’s way into legislation, quite sad. There’s no difference between femicide and murder. It’s all the same thing. Is there a guy that killed 10 women for no reason? Sure, that counts, but in all other cases it should simply be murder.

For all the contrarians in the comments: is this a major issue in Italy? No. Its impact is overblown by a bunch of really loud people? Yes. Do italians target women that much? No, according to raw stats our homicide rate of women is low and homicide in general is an issue of the past.
Is this still a good bill? Yes, 100%. Is it good to target with this scrutiny women’s murder? Yes, 100%. For once it had bi-partisan support.

Wow, that’s a pretty sexist law if I’ve ever seen one. Why wasn’t the law introduced for killing of both sexes? How the hell is that even equal rights, not to mention the legality of this? The government literally tells your life as a man worth less than that of a woman.
