    1. Well….just because the Russian government and their oligarchy are a bunch of assholes does not mean Ireland has to be as well. Supplying medical supplies is beyond politics, that’s human decency, even, and especially, if the Russians would not….

It’s incredibly hypocritical to have any trade ties with Russia. There’s credible evidence Putin has wide support in Russia, mostly from independent polls like those by the Levada Center, which consistently show his approval around 70–80%, even after the Ukraine war. Why are we feeding or giving healthcare to so an awful country?

I’m in favour of forcing Russia to end this war by all means possible and giving Ukraine everything they need to do this. However there has been backsliding on companies ‘doing the right thing’ and not trading with Russia and many of them never stopped. They aren’t breaking any rules if they aren’t violating sanctions.

Realistically this is something for Europe to do by increasing sanctions coverage.

When they return our stolen aircraft, then we should reconsider how we deal with Russia.

When the invasion occurred there wasn’t enough room on the TV screen for FFG politicians loudly and aggressively virtue-signalling their determination to enforce sanctions, and some* were calling the likes of Clare Daly a co conspirator with Putin for suggesting that they don’t work, and punish the wrong people.

Can we shove this in their faces specifically please?

      * Neale Richmond (can’t remember the actual words he used, just his smarmy disdain to anyone who objected to their Very Important sanctions)

      > The jump in export value was driven by a surge in medicinal and pharmaceutical products, which reached almost €113.5m. Pharmaceuticals and medicines are exempt from sanctions for humanitarian reasons.
      >
      > Sales of metalliferous ores and metal scrap also surged, to over €183.4m.
      >
      > Essential oils, perfume materials, and toilet preparation exports also experienced a year-on-year increase, nearly doubling to over €60m.

So that accounts for over €350m of the €400m. Products exempted from sanctions, rubbish and raw materials, and smelly stuff.

Every time they drop a bomb or fire a rocket or a bullet in Israel, the people I work for make more money. We can’t avoid it in the medical industries.
