>Rather than join Canada and China with instant retaliation and inflict pain on US consumers and businesses, the EU — hamstrung by divergent views among its member states — chose to take the pain in the hope of securing a better deal.

The EU is not a nation. Whenever a Commission President needs to be appointed, the heads of state and government choose someone who will not overshadow them.
When proposals are made to strengthen the EU, there are cries of loss of sovereignty for member states. Meanwhile, in member states, many citizens continue to believe that their country is still a major power.
We have the Europe we deserve: a political dwarf that crumbles and will continue to do so. I am ashamed of this EU.

There is no hiding the fact the EU was rolled over by the Trump juggernaut, said one ambassador. “Trump worked out exactly where our pain threshold is.”

This is absolutely pathetic I don’t know what to say anymore. The only thing I can do is reducing usage of American products and services and voting for political parties with more spine and strategic thinking on such matters (Volt?)

Unpopular opinion but if trump keeps it up we have nothing to fear. Yes there are big Numbers and yes US is a big tradepartner but… look how much euro has rose against the dollar, also massive inflation in US, No exeption on drug import from EU is probably going to bring people on the streets etc. Let’s be chill and wait it out.

I need a Polymarket on when the EU project finally collapses. The US has its hand so far in its ass and has openly stated their goal is to dismantle the entire thing.
The only way the EU has a chance of becoming a real superpower is merging further politically and militarily.
Or they can try to play around with China but they won’t because they’ve been brainwashed into serving US geopolitical interesting under the abstract notion of “doing what’s right”

we all laugh at how stupid Trump is, but he is somehow playing our so-called smart leaders and coming out on top on every single matter while they all just bow down and agree on everything he demands?

What do people expect? Every country keeps sending the C team to the EU, while the rest of the politicians who are machiavellian enough stay in their national politics.
The results is a bunch of pathetic german aristocrats who would be nothing in any other case but instead here they run these union institutions.
None of this is sustainable.
Ask any german if they would let vdl run anything in germany. So how can she run the EU?

The US consumer will pay most of this. You can only buy Porsche from Germany and French wine from France. Of course it will impact demand (not entirely price inelastic).
The interesting play is the US weapons purchase requirement for the EU. Where does it leave the UK? Has Starmer just been sidelined by Trump?

I would’ve liked the EU to play this harder. It’s incredibly annoying to appease a bully and any treaty with his name on it isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. He will have a temper tantrum and tear it to shreds anyway.

I just hope it’s a wake up call to move as far apart from the US as possible and seek more reliable partners. We need to drop US products and services.

No need to be alarmed. The rolling was conducted with regulatory dignity and according to EU protocol. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Meh, the eu is merely buying time – this agreement will never come to fruition in its current form, and both parties know it.

already wrote this under another post:
It is a bad deal and EU politicians’ appeasement is worrying. But it might not be that bad:
* Tariffs are essentially taxes on American consumers and importers. Since the US baseline tariff is now 10%, EU products are no less competitive when compared to the rest of the world. It is a different matter if it forces EU companies to shift their investments to the US, but since Trump taxes all the other inputs like steel, copper etc, it might still be more economical to import things from the EU.
* Things like energy purchases or other investments are typically non-binding or things that will happen anyway, but they are packaged in a way that shows it as a win for Trump’s domestic audience.

And the worst part of it is that in a few months time (perhaps even earlier) Trump (just like all blackmailers) will come back for more. He’ll invent some lame excuse and demand more concessions. This whole ordeal was not a surprise. We all knew deep down that the current crop of EU leaders are gutless cowards or Trump sycophants and they managed to prove it. And the worst part of it all is that there’s no hope for the EU. The EPP is useless and corrupt, the far-right parties are Putin and Trump satellites and the leftist parties are either Putinist apologists (most far left parties) or in deep decline (socialists).

I still don’t get why the EU agreed to this deal, Trump has shown he will happily tear them up at the drop of a hat…

That which face Von der Leyen which none of us had elected negotiated a terrible deal, except for pharma, and probably to her self – I wonder already what will be her next job.
Anybody can remind me her nationality? Is she from that nation that owns pretty much all the European pharma industry? Thanks.

The only country that could help EU against USA is *Russia*, but EU is stuck in funding suicide mission because of which Ukraine is losing 2 to 3% of it’s population every year, while having highest crude death rate (~17 per 1000) and lowest crude birth rate (~5.5 per 1000) in the world (~3.1 death per born child)
As you all bought the “rely on Russia for energy” meme, now you’re relying on USA for energy and will get squeezed because of it
My advice: Get Ukraine to concede defeat for their own good and say France will nuke Moscow if they attack further than what is negotiated, show some spine and then trade with all global players or just accept to be sucked dry by America

Why ? Because the EU can not handle the US , the size of the economy the size of the investment also because many countries in the EU are extremely terrified of migrants therefore the population is shrinking whereas the us did the opposite for many many years

Is it just me or are these tariffs worse for the US than for the EU? All countries have tariffs, and these will be paid by American citizens. Domestic American producers will buy foreign goods (steel, aluminum, etc.) at higher prices anyway, so prices will increase for all products, not just European ones. Everyone loses, but the US loses the most. I think Trump will be impeached next year because the US economy will go downhill, and domestic scandals are getting bigger and bigger.

A lot of member states would rather roll over and refuse to take their own destiny into their hands… End of story.
They refused to read the writing on the wall during Trump’s first term, second term comes and still they just bury their heads and want to pretend like it’s going to go back to normal.
Maybe it will, but running a country relies on a bit more than wishful thinking.
