The treaty sucks and you can’t convince us otherwise
This whole thing is just to buy some time – or at least make the transition a bit less painfull. The USA got some good deals recently, but paid with their soft power they accumulated since WWII.
That last sentence reminds me of a Harry Potter movie… Announced by the Minister just before the Ministry falls.
It’s one of those things: if you’ve got to announce it you know you’re in trouble.
Doesn’t this deal as it is make new trade deals harder? The tariffs hurt areas like economy of scale and purchasing unfinished goods which used EU components before assembly in the US such as various machining tools. The energy deal means nations like Canada which expected to be increasing energy exports outside the US have less negotiating power and would be less interested in EU deals. The additional investments into the US reduces investment capability as part of other deals such as those France has pursued with India. It ties the EU to the US more closely and increases economic reliance between countries while making the EU a junior partner. When going to countries like Brazil to negotiate deals does he think they won’t look at those US ties and wonder exactly how much leverage the US can exert through them if the US could secure such a deal?

This deal is **NOT GOOD** for us Europeans!!!
It’s OK short term, but longer term this puts a big disadvantage on European companies selling in the US, which from now on will always be an extra 15% more expensive than what a similar US company would be.
**If it doesn’t revert back soon, we need to implement a 15% tariff on ALL US services (software, social media ads, hollywood) and clearly have European alternatives ready to overtake their market share!!!**

That is an embarrassment, not a deal. I hope the Parliament won’t sell the EU to the US again. Trump causes so much international instability that everyone would negotiate with us for a better trade deal, yet the EU leadership seems fine with being the USA puppy. Where are the voices that call for strategic independence now?

Who is going to try and sign a deal with the EU now to mitigate this, there is absolutely no way your getting favourable or better terms because the EU will want to rightly reassert their authority and it’ll be at the extent of countries negotiating or renegotiating deals.
They’re going to want to stand back and see if this just blows over.

Also we cannot retaliate because Trump would declare a tariff war with us.
His current point of view is “US trade balance with EU is negative so I’ve got to catch up with that”.
We should just grow the EU, leave the US-EU relation. Build a strong and Independent Europe, with good relations.

When push came to shove, the national capitals got scared and preferred their national self-interests above a strong EU. The world laughs. And now we also understand why the EU is weak vis-a-vis China.
I hope this deal is made with the idea that a future american president is gonna get back to their senses and makes free trade possible again. Nevertheless Weber is right in the notion, that we need to start to explore all possible markets to make us independent from the american hegenomy in future.

We’ve been buying American gas on a massive scale for 3 years now, and that’s how they’ve been treating us. The EU has done virtually nothing to get rid of this dependence, arguing that it’s temporary or a lesser evil.
The same goes for weapons: American agents are stirring up the idea of an emergency, and Trump is threatening to give more support to the Ukraine to force us to arm ourselves to their advantage, destroying our last remaining tools.
When you have German conservatives and the EPP in strong positions, that’s going to be what you get nonetheless. You can barely find more of US-appeasing neo-liberal scum than these bunch.
