>Following a tip-off from the public, the St. Gallen city police have discovered illegally painted blue zone parking bays on a street. For the time being, the police do not know who grabbed a paint bucket and brush to paint more parking spaces.

>Someone had actually gone to the trouble of extending an existing parking space, wrote the “St. Galler Tagblatt” in Tuesday’s edition. The illegal action was not recognisable at first glance by laypersons.

>A previously removed parking space, on which three cars could be parked, had been painted back onto the road by unknown persons, a spokesperson for the St. Gallen city police confirmed at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.

>The illegally installed parking space was reported by a person who was passing the section of road on a bicycle and had difficulty crossing with oncoming vehicles. It was precisely for this reason that the parking bay in question was recently removed, the police spokesman continued.

>The police do not know who drew the blue brushstrokes on Unterstrasse. The police spokesman added that the perpetrators could face charges.

>Last March, the city of St. Gallen announced plans to remove more than one hundred above-ground parking spaces in the city centre. The aim is to relocate parked cars to public underground car parks. (sda)
