Big Corp salivating at all that free precious data.
Do you have to do the age check everytime you want to visit one of these sites ?
They need to repeal that garbage bill, no one supports this censorship 🤦♂️ makes me wanna move away, don’t want to see how much worse it gets
Going to be a drop in the ocean if we have to verify to listen to songs on Spotify.
“when age verification became mandatory for accessing pornography”
For accessing any content which may or may not be suitable for small children, there’s no way to know where the cut off point lies as the regulations are meaninglessly vague.
Anyone saying this is for porn has an agenda.
Genuinly considering writing an email to keir starmer everytime I have a wank.
Why bother – just install the opera browser with free VPN built in. No age checks required
Please sign the petition to repeal the law. It already has more than 400k signatures. We need to continue putting pressure on them and not give up: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/722903
People are upset about this, but broadly it is just happening and most people are complying. It’ll be the thin end (or not so thin) of the wedge and a decline into authoritarianism.
This forced data harvest to third party companies reeks of corruption, as somebody is benefitting massively financially from this. But also, the eradication of online anonymity feels like a precursor to something. Is it part of a general preparation for wartime? Easier to control the population when nobody feels like they can express themselves freely online.
“We’re now assessing compliance to make sure platforms have them in place, and companies that fall short should expect to face enforcement action.”
I wonder what they’re on now, they were practically boasting about having looked at 6k sites a couple of days ago.
There’s in excess of 1 billion websites.
So as long as no one makes a new website, they’ll have looked at all of them in about 2.7 million years.
Can’t wait to see what my neighbour’s poison of choice is once the DB holding all this data inevitably leaks. My bets are on fisting.
“Ofcom has said service providers should not encourage users to deploy VPNs in order to circumvent age controls”
That’s nice, but they have literally no power to do anything about it.
Also, they’re not going to have to advertise “Get our VPN and laugh in the faces of idiot MPs” because everyone already knows – the press have already done that job for them.
How many sites do people actually use that require an age check? I’ve only had to use it for Reddit so far.
~~Pornography sites~~ literally anything that could potentially include references to content above a BBFC 12, and sometimes not even that
i really hate the sneakiness of politicians.
they promote it as a bill that will only protect kids from porn, who would be against that? nobody, obviously.
on day one of the bill coming into law, it started to censor speech on immigration, it even censored a speech a MP made in the HoC.
The only party that said they would repeal this bill is the party that gets called authoritarian fascists by labour MPs.. oh the irony.
I’m just looking forward to finding out what our MP and celebritie’s porn preferences are when this data inevitably gets leaked
This is the soft launch. We won’t be able to see or learn anything about illegal immigration or boat landings soon. Any risk of disorder and things will be shut down for being too inflammatory.
One day they’ll automatically scan your face in the background through FaceID to access these sites
they got pin numbers for TV, why not register with fake details just to get the pin number so when you load up the site it forces you for a pin number, teenagers will know how to do it.
This is a complete mess. It’s like the wild west and no one knows how to control and if they do they’ll abuse it
I actually support the new UK age verification law for adult content, and I genuinely don’t get why people are so mad about it. If you’re losing your mind over having to prove you’re an adult to watch porn, you sound suspicious as hell.
Like, what are you watching that you’re so scared of getting linked to it? It must be some really nasty shit if you’re that worried about basic age checks. To me, this law makes total sense — it’ll actually help catch creeps and predators who have been hiding behind total anonymity for years.
And beyond that, it protects kids from being exposed to stuff they shouldn’t be seeing in the first place. It also forces adult sites to be more responsible and finally act like they’re part of a real industry, not just a lawless corner of the internet.
We already show ID to buy alcohol, drive, or enter a club. No one complains about that. But the second someone suggests we do the same for porn, suddenly it’s the end of freedom?
If you’re scared of this law, maybe it’s not the law that’s the problem — maybe it’s what you’re doing online
