I really don’t see how this changes.
Since Covid we have seen a fundamental change in how parents and children see the importance of education.
Every teacher I speak to says the same, there are a core of kids who see no benefit to it and consider it optional, every day we have 10-20 kids who just roam the hallways and support staff spend their day playing hide and seek with. Parents don’t care, excluding them just gives them what they want, until this changes I’m not sure what can be done.

Increase population without increasing jobs and some people are going to find themselves unemployed – usually the ones trying to get their foot on the ladder.
>Estimates for payrolled employees in the UK fell by 135,000 (0.4%) between May 2024 and May 2025
We just had figures suggesting 700k population growth for the year prior, probably not too far off that for the most recent year too. That’s a lot of unemployment added.
This story is about Dorset but it’s probably the same everywhere.

These figures absolutely put me off having children, but I guess I wouldn’t give them the option of not working.

I fear these numbers will only get worse with the new Employer NI Rate and Threshold in place.

In other news there are fuck all jobs for young people and what’s left they are trying to get AI to do instead.

Well there’s no incentives for employees to take on younger workers.
There’s a reason why the minimum wage was significantly lower for a younger worker if you shrink the gap employers will choose the slightly more mature and more likely to be reliable full minimum wage employee.

I used to think these people were bums, but now with the way things are going… Tbh I don’t blame them.

Make is easier and cheaper than ever for Companies to hire Indian workers. AI slowly coming in replacing a number of roles in some corporations.
It’ll only get worse before it gets better with Labour and much worse quicker with Reform.
We are doomed and poverty will sharply continue to rise.

Does this surprise anyone after the massive reduction in low paid positions across the country? For example in call centres and retail there has been widespread adoption of AI call handing, on-line chat as first point of contact and self-serve point-of-sale terminals.

How are people supporting themselves if they are not working?
If I stopped working I’d be homeless. The threat of that is what keeps me going.

This is a symptom of modern day society
These children have no job prospects and many won’t move away. Traditionally they would go to work in forestry, farms or fisheries in Dorset.
A lot of this is disappearing. Farms are being closed down and bought up by the London crowd for their holiday homes for example.
And these industries are so heavily underfunded, as is symbolised by the failing Eden Project just a few miles over.
100 years ago, people probably saw this coming. Not every child needs an education. If gramps and dad were farmers, it was 90% likely their grandson would become a farmer too.
Now modern society is destroying Britain from the inside out and leaving that grandson to be a drug addict or dealer instead.

Government could create jobs such as street cleaners/litter pickers for these kids. If they don’t do it, then no benefits. Jobs that requires zero qualifications and would benefit the country.

What we need is more apprenticeships offers from coffee shops like Pret A Manger for barista positions.
Or even better.
Replace all entry level positions with apprenticeships so corporations can save and enslave everyone.

You need to massively restrict disability benefits to stop this from happening. Quadriplegic? Fair enough. Signed off for anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia? Get a job

Get a good education = get a good job
Whereas its now Get a good education = Get taken the piss out of and offered entry level jobs

As someone from Dorset, it is a county with only one real major town and even that is mostly filled with low-level admin jobs, tourism and health/social care as the sort of careers you could hope for. Bournemouth is OK but there is nothing that really strikes out in the way of proper industry here, so kid have nothing to aspire to down here. Not to mention that property prices are so high here compared to wages that kids are going to feel a sense of apathy towards working here. This is not a county geared towards young people, it is geared towards elderly people, it is not going to get better without significant investment.

Who’s surprised? The bar is being raised even for basic entry level roles. You now need to be Einstein to be a shop assistant.

Just think – for all the billions taken out of TW in payments and bonuses, that money should have been used to upgrade and repair the system.
All of which would have generated real jobs and opportunities, which are still needed to be done.
And that’s just one example.

I was looking for work around the time of the switch over from physical applications to online applications. It was awful, with an online application you never felt the satisfaction of being acknowledged, plus filling out long application forms was mind destroying. For young people it’s incredibly difficult to get your foot in the door and mentally it’s difficult to take those initial rejections.
