I find it hard to believe this would have represented worse value for money than booking out hotels. It does seem to be true that costs had surged beyond expected though, as is often the case with government projects.
It’s almost like this government and previous government think there is an infinite pot of money.
You’ve got to love the press’s ability to “both sides” everything.

The Conservatives threw £50m in consulting fees and other payments to various companies to convert an old RAF base to an asylum centre that wasn’t needed. It was supposed to cost £5m, but that had gone up to £50m, and was estimated to go up to £180m by 2027.
And yet this is all Labour’s fault.
