Back when Putin had his tentacles all over Ukraine, he had no reason to oppose its NATO accession because he knew it wasn’t possible. Now, he claims that Ukraine joining NATO is a threat — but the real reason isn’t NATO itself. It’s that he can no longer influence Ukrainian politics.
He had everything (2022) in mind from the beginning. You had to be stupid to believe him, or a hypocrite…
It is perhaps also interesting to note that Putin also negotiated with the then NATO General about Russia joining NATO.
Yet the echo chamber of trump haters on reddit has lot to say about trump but barely anything on putin.

He only said it for one reason: russians of 2002 were not yet ready to hear what he really wanted to say. It would take 20 years of brainwashing until they would be ready.

He also says a lot of stuff then says the opposite next sentence. Like he says “he wants peace, but also the root causes to be dealt with” the root cause is a sovereign Ukraine. This is not new he said the same things when he was like Russia is interested in joining nato but then adds a bunch of non sense conditions. It’s just what he does
Current Putin looks different from the 2002 one. That one was slender and had elongated skull and longer nose. Current one has round face, shorter nose and different ears.
