      It was such a load of scaremongering bull.

      The Irish gov had no plan whatsoever, this is a fantastic interview by Finucane:

      I will also never forget this mokumentary that they aired a snippet during The Late Late Show. They literally cut from the ad break into a fake news bulletin that Sellafield had been hit:

      2001 was pretty wild after 9/11.

The majority of the UK’s nuclear waste is stored there – some of it in buildings which do not meet modern standards, and which pose an ‘intolerable’ risk.

      While Sellafield Ltd has demonstrated that it is possible to safely retrieve waste from all of its oldest buildings, this is not happening quickly enough. One of these buildings, the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo, is leaking contaminated water into the ground: this building is likely to continue to represent an ‘intolerable’ risk until the late 2050s… The Department needs to do more to ensure that the site is decommissioned in a way that represents value for money for the taxpayer. The estimated cost–£136 billion–would rise even further if work is deferred for short term affordability reasons, or if the Geological Disposal Facility is delayed.”

      Can someone explain to me how a reprocessing site could explode in such a way Ireland would be damaged??

      Remember this they sent 6 tablets to a 4 person household with a card that told us to shut the windows and take two each if seelafield exploded. We joked about how we have to lord of the flies to see who doesn’t get the tablets.

      I thought the iodine tablets were suicide pills that all the family had to take in case Sellafield blew up. Suicide was a better option. 🫢

      I remember as a kid (I grew up in Wicklow) being taken on a school tour to Wales to visit a Nuclear Plant ( I don’t think it was Sellafield). The whole thing was a presentation on how safe the nuclear power plants were.

      It was my favorite ever school trip, we got to go on a ferry.

      Anyone remember the fake RTE documentary about a Sellafield accident?? Complete with fake news bulletins. Anxiety inducing.

      I visited Sellafield in the 80s with the Scouts. Lived in Merseyside and very early in the morning you would occasionally catch lads in white protective gear and geiger counter on the beach taking samples of the sand. I must admit it really put me off swimming.
