Well with additionnals tariffs sounds like they will have no choice but to go back look at who winned the trials or ask for another one and have rafale dominate it even more without all those sketchy stuff of making the f-35 cheaper by acting like flying less the f-35 and instead using simulators, not considering that first and foremost they want a plane to do air policing and not an expensive to maintain stealthy aircraft, not/barely buying weapons and unilaterally saying that the price would be guaranteed.
Otherwise as far as i get there is nothing of signed so there would be no penalty anyway.

But Europeans are getting screwed over and are still buying American goods, terrified of Russia.

From article
“In June, it became known that the US and Switzerland had a different understanding of the fixed price for the 36 fighter aircraft to be procured. Because the US is talking about a “misunderstanding”, the purchase price alone could result in additional costs of $650 million to $1.3 billion (CHF607 million to CHF1 billion).”
This is a big mess for me. How did those talks go if they are now talking about a higher price?
This alone should make the Swiss abandon the plane and demand the cancellation of all contracts.

Literally just buy Eurofighters from the Germans. They are great aircraft, Switzerland doesn’t need top of the line when the airforce doesn’t even operate on the weekends

Problem is Switzerland is tiny and a couple F35 more or less won’t change a thing for Trump.
But, it is probable the US domestic audience would hear news from that, bringing bad press to Trump, which is in the end the only thing that matters to him.
He wants good buzz. Choice should have been different but now it’s too late and cancelled the deal would mean an even worse deal in the end. Switzerland is to small to make Trump change his mind with a stick (it doesn’t have).
Reason for Switzerland punishments is unclear. Some say Trump was insulted by Thursday call when the negotiator came with nothing in her hands (Switzerland is so decentralized, such quick negotiations are practically impossible, it takes years usually to find a consensus). Fast acting is really something Switzerland polical system is bad at.
Other theory is that Van der Leyen (and her chief of Swiss relations) asked Trump to punish Switzerland to make EU bad deal seem more palatable by avoiding repeating UK humiliation (UK having had a better deal on its own).

I am curious to see what Austria will buy. The decision is expected to be made this year, and the F-35 is reportedly on the shortlist (alongside the Eurofighter, Saab Gripen, and Dassault Rafale).

Should have bought Eurofighter or Rafale.

At this rate, I’m not sure Switzerland is going to get any advanced fighter jets in a reasonable timeframe.
