“I am CMAT,” Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson announced as she stepped on to Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage in June. “I’ve got middle-child syndrome, an amazing arse and the best Irish country rock’n’roll band in the world.”
In a blue plastic dress, the 29-year-old singer-songwriter — two parts Shania Twain to one part Lizzo — had the self-possession of a superstar. She pretended to faint before performing her first song lying down. She ripped off her male bandmates’ matching blue kilts. When she performed the fan favourite I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!, asking the crowd to join her in a “Dunboyne two-step”, tens of thousands of hands went up in the air.
Still, Thompson’s life lacks some of the glamour you might expect. When she came off stage, she went back to a tent. “I slept for 13 hours that night … I hadn’t slept properly from November until then.” She adds: “It was just a normal tent, by the way — I wasn’t in a nice tent.”
It has been a whirlwind year for the outspoken Irish singer who wowed Glastonbury. She opens up about online abuse, body image and her meteoric rise

It kind of feels like she fell through some very obvious cracks in Ireland specifically. Like, the country seems to have a huge demographic of country music lovers, yet, “If My Wife New I’d Be Dead” went very under the radar in Ireland and still does, even as a very successful country pop album. You’d have to imagine that image plays a part in that.
I hope she continues to make music the way she has been doing so. Her storytelling is fantastic.

Is this one of those “let’s talk about me by suggesting I’m a victim” interviews or has the subeditor stitched her up a bit?

I really like her songs, but i can’t shake the thought from my head that she performs and sounds like a middle aged woman doing karaoke on holiday in Spain.

Unironically who is cmat? I know she’s a singer but that’s it? Is it another kneecap cause she speaks about modern issues?

Not sure what age she is but she seems old to be worried about what the average person thinks about her looks, she hardly dresses for mass appeal

Her stuff isn’t my cupán tae, but as a music fan I do wonder if her approach is a bit too…’jokey’, even if you look at the tracklist for her upcoming album and even the song titles are nearly all some sort of pun or in-joke that only Irish or British people would get.
I’m big into music but there is a thing in the Irish music scene where a lot of bands and artists feel like they have to be the ‘craic’ all the time.

Just saw her at the weekend at ATN. Best performance of the weekend, had 30k people in the palm of her hand. The camera panned to a sign in the crowd, “CMAT mar Uachtarán” and it erupted with cheers.

I’m going to get downvoted to fuck especially on this sub but I don’t care. She is peak victim mentality of young Irish people which I HATE. “All the berties I was 12 when the da’s started killing themselves” GIRL BERTIE AHERN DIDNT SINGLE HANDEDLY ENCOURAGE MIDDLE AGED MEN TO TAKE OUT EXORBITANT LOANS THEY HAD NO CHANCE OF REPAYING. SO MANY IN THE COUNTRY WENT MAD. This country has a cohort of people who focus much too little on individual responsibility and love to scapegoat all their problems on FF and FG without acknowledging how overwhelming lucky they are to live in this country and how impressive Ireland ascent to wealth in the last 100 years has been.

Limited knowledge of her but I certainly wouldn’t consider her a country artist.

The Internet Da’s are out in force today, I see.
Enjoying their chilled bank holiday afternoon commenting “who?” about one of the most successful musicians on the Irish scene at the moment.
Not knowing things doesn’t make you seem clever or cool.

I like her music, stage persona and vibe. But why is every piece of promo just her complaining about something. The last time about the Irish language was a bit much in particular. It was portrayed as though the BBC purposely cut the start of her song due to Irish being in it when in reality it was just a standard radio edit

Saw her for the first time at ATN and was very impressed. There’s humour there, but that whole show was worked out from start to finish, no faffingabout. She’s witty, unabashed, no insincere “i love you guys” and very fucking fit!

Decent singer, decent music, comes across like an arsehole.
Seen her live a few times and was excellent.
She’s like the modern bono really

After this summer, I seem to know more about her opinions than her music.
Is she any good?

I think she’s a breath of fresh air when it comes to the Irish music scene. Her lyrics are great, and she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She has sold out a good few shows for her next tour too.
Her podcast episode with Adam Buxton is well worth a listen. Looking forward to seeing her in October.

I think her recent euro country thing is pretty good- it’s one of the first interpretations of the Celitc tiger done by a person who was a child of the period. I think it’s nearly groundbreaking genuinely.
