Great news. I get that the idea was to incentivise hiring younger people but that shouldn’t be done at the expense of the young person then making fuck all compared to a person just a few years older.

I can see both sides of this.
On one hand as an 18 year old, I don’t have much to pay for like a house or children or anything if that sort. It also works as an incentive to hire me Vs an older person as they can pay me less for the same work despite having to train me because of lack of experience.
On the other, it’s the same work and is deserving of equal pay. No one is arguing to pay women less because on average they can’t carry as many bricks on a construction site, in fact you would actively be told your an arse hole if you did. Fairness in pay could encourage those my age not currently looking for work to get into it, but on the other hand could limit how much employers want to hire us because again little experience.
It’s a weird one and I assume away of trying to attract those younger voters they just introduced.

Some actual good news, just because somebody is young does not mean they should be paid less, they still have to put in the same amount for effort and time on the job, if you want a more experienced individual, pay more than minimum wage.
I remember that during the April review people were complaining they didn’t implement this as it was in their manifesto, it definitely seems they are pushing they manifesto forward, slowly but steadily.

The sad truth is a significant number of people in the country can’t generate £13 in value during an hour.
I’m not sure how raising the minimum wage is going to solve this fundamental issue.

Excellent. It’s hard enough starting out without being deliberately undervalued due to your age. Hopefully it’ll incentivise a few more NEETs

Unfortunately this will be buried under the GB news echo chamber, I’m sure they’ll twist it some way or another. It’s great to see if a bit too late, i wish I earned my fair share working 16 to 21, probably would’ve been in less of a pickle. But I’m glad young people in the future will be rewarded accordingly. Hopefully.

Ok, but what about cost of living? Wages up, companies put their prices up. Cycle continues. Get the billionaires!

Young people are probably going to get hired less now, why pay someone with no experience when you can pay the same to someone with experience.

It’s never made sense to me.
Of you’ve ever had to manage under 18s (and overs) then you’ll know that there isn’t really a difference between them and the general population.
Some are amazing, some are terrible.

Not a good move imo. Cheap temporary labour is required in an economy.

Good. Two people doing identical jobs should not be paid differently just because of their age.
