He primarily worked on smart card security and voice encryption. In 1998, he was found dead under circumstances the police ruled as suicide. However, his family and others raised doubts due to missing identification and several inconsistencies.
Far from merely decoding TV signals, he was a cybersecurity prodigy. He developed his own voice encryption device and worked on secure communication systems. He was also a member of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), then Europe’s largest hacker association.

Publicizing your cryptography achievements makes you a dead man walking.
Friends and family often tend to look for deeper meaning when someone dies unexpectedly. It’s quite a common response.
Most of these cases of supposed hackers and whistle blowers are just their loved ones coping, most of them are far from being important enough to be killed.
Big corporations and even mobs and even even intelligence agencies use killings as a very last resort and only in cases where there’s absolutely no other way.
Usually fear works well enough with 99.9% of people.
Otherwise we’d see TONS of people killed by billionaires and politicians every day.
Even Putin and MBS don’t use it that often and on insignificant people, and even they barely get away with it in terms of the world knowing it’s them.
If anything, they would have recruited him.

He also hacked other things, mostly telephones. Also analoge Pay-TV wasn’t really encrypted, it only had control-signals missing.
