Tired of cruise liners full of tourists destroying their beautiful city?

Outside of the fact it’s noted oil industry city Aberdeen, I’ve precisely no issue with hotels charging a levy that goes to the council to cover the additional expenses that tourists incur for them (with no source of revenue to cover the costs).

My only real issue is that this won’t apply to the US companies like Airbnb, who always claim to “just be the middle men between customers and suppliers”

Tourists are already effectively paying a lot of tax and supporting the economy by staying in hotels eating in restaurants, and visiting local attractions.

It seems a bit greedy to try to take even more directly from them. And risks turning them away to more welcoming destinations.

If the problem is specific to cruise ships who don’t support the economy, then tax them directly.

I lived in aberdeen for 4 years; when the sun’s out it’s gorgeous, but i didn’t realise it even really had a significant tourist industry. All the boats I remember seeing were oil and shipping related.
Admittedly, I was a student and almost permanently drunk so I may not have been particularly observant but still…aberdeen never struck me as a city in need of a tourist tax.

I get that places like Barcelona have done it, but uh there can’t be that many tourists here to justify this surely? Maybe I’m wrong…

We have just introduced a tourist tax in Liverpool, not sure of the percentage but as virtually all our museums, art galleries and both cathedrals are free I think it’s fair enough as it goes to keeping them going and open.

That should kill Aberdeen as a destination stone dead.

I didn’t even know this was a thing until a recent trip to Spain

Slightly odd that they want to use the levy to attract more tourists to the city.

    10. Been there before and it’s not particularly a fun place to visit. Nice folks but very grey

    11. Out of all the tourist spots in Scotland I wouldn’t have put Aberdeen in the top 10, this isn’t likely to bring in much revenue.

I think tourist taxes shouldn’t be allowed for UK taxpayers, my tax money already directly and indirectly goes towards supporting these places, if you want to raise the prices then fine, if the council alongside businesses want to start some extra funding for local events and stuff by using funds from the hotels? sure go ahead but taxpayers shouldn’t be further impeded regarding travel around the UK.

It’s just an issue you have when a city has so much draw and sure I get it’s shitty, but it’s also shitty that tons of london commuters are making towns and villages near me impossible for locals to actually buy or sometimes even rent in, are we going to charge people not from the area more to buy/rent because it’s put us in a shitty position?

Do that many people really visit Aberdeen as a tourists?

    14. radiant_0wl on

I don’t think it was warranted.

Aberdeen isn’t a tourist destination and the majority of the visits are likely to be business related and they don’t have the same negatives as over tourism.

Hotel occupancy also seems to be relatively low at around 65-70% so it’s a case of needing to restrict visitor numbers.

They claim to want to invest it into events and conferences which i suppose is an interesting twist which may increase additional visitors.

I’m not against tourist taxes. I pay them all over the world so it’s only right that we charge them too.
