I don’t believe there was any “moral” case for him repaying it, contrary to what the DG in the article states.
It was RTE’s decision to grant him the payment.
Now, there may well be an ulterior motive for him paying it back, such as a desire to get back on the air, or simply an attempt to clean his reputation… but the issue here is with how RTE conducted its business, rather than Tubirdy’s taking of the deal offered.

Wonder why he waited so long to do it.

I’m no fan of him, but he should have kept it if he had no obligation to return it. The people who gave that money, the people running RTE at the time should be liable. Ryan Tubridy was just a contractor.
You’ve Dee Forbes there pretending to be sick so she doesn’t have to face the music. It’s a fucking joke.

He technically had no obligation to return it, but also knows he’d probably walk back into a job at RTE any time he wants – so best to keep them on side and repay the money.

Fair dues to him. Although it took a while and he’s cost his former employer about €50M with his carry on.

Fair play to him, in fairness if he never paid it back what could they do, the lad was a convenient scapegoat for all of RTE ills. I’m not a fan but 150k is a massive amount of money even to a wealthy man like Tubs.

I don’t like the guy personally, but the overpayment was RTE’s eff-up… and they were rewarded with a 725 million bail out. THAT should be the real story.

Is Dee Forbes still “sick”? Galls me that her job was paid so well, as she would have to take responsibility and accountability for the organisations success or failings.
But as soon as accountability was knocking at her door, she locked the door and left by the back window.

Glad he repaid it, but he did what he did and got caught out. Why should he be given a ‘second chance’ when there’s heaps of talented Irish people who haven’t even gotten their ‘first’ chance. Fuck that.

Id have personally remortgaged my house and paid €150,000 to have that insufferable, egotistical, dose taken off radio and TV.
There’s a crime called making a gain or causing a loss by deception. It is an offence under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001. I can’t get my head around why nobody in the Gardaí is looking at this RTÉ barter-account situation in light of that crime.
That section basically says if you dishonestly and by deception get someone to do (or not do) something, with the aim of making a gain for yourself *or for someone else*, you’ve committed a crime. Doesn’t matter if you’re the one pocketing the cash (or if you paid it back, Ryan) or just the eejit in RTE who fixed the scheme up with Renault.
After all, this money was secretly funnelled to Tubridy through a barter account, with RTÉ footing the bill and Renault in on the paperwork. The payments were dressed up as something else so nobody’d cop that old soul Tubs, Mr “I like books and JFK was my spirit animal” was secretly earning more than €500k a year. That’s more than “creative accounting”.
I’m not saying Ryan, Dee Forbes or Mary in accounts in RTE or any of them are guilty – that’s for the courts to decide. However, there’s more than enough here for the guards to have a good look at the books and ask some questions. Because if this was you or me pulling stunts with barter accounts and secret payments, we’d be answering questions in a Garda station by now, not talking about “governance failures”, handing in sick certs like that poor cratur Dee Forbes.
