      The word ‘promise’ was only mentioned in the headline. Nowhere was he quoted saying he wouldn’t run.
      “No, Iā€™m not planning to anymore, not planning to” Oh, hey! Maybe he’ll do it anyway, becauuuuse…
      “ā€” well, listen, if Trump is nearly 80 and still looks decentā€¦,ā€”

      I don’t feel *I don’t plan to* to be a cross-my-heart promise of anything, but maybe that’s just me.

      If previous “strongman” authoritarian regimes are anything to go by, it’ll be some faceless bureaucrat(s) who will either:

      * democratize like in Spain (not hapenning lmao)
      * maintain the levers of power, but open up the regime to some degree, like in Yugoslavia and Kazakhstan (somewhat likely)
      * not do jackshit and get deposed like in Portugal (extremely unlikely)

      If it’s somebody with an actual profile, things will remain as usual.

      Yeah Lukashenko is going to step down then whoever wins next will step down bravely and appoint Lukashenko as president, and he’ll refuse respectfully but be insisted and then the nation will clap loudly and cheer for him to do it anyway and he’ll reluctantly continue holding power for another ~~four~~ eight years because the people of Belarus love him so much!!!!! /s

      Luky’s replacement is Putin, Belarus will be joined under Russia as one state, that much is clear…Luky rather doomed his country than allow to be replaced, good job, especially since he disliked Putin his whole life and tried to keep Belarus his own playground…but now afraid for his life he hands it to Putin no problem, not caring 1 single bit for the country and all for living 5-10 more years

      But will his country still exist at the end of his term? Belarus may be part of the Union State, and Lukashenko may hold the position of ā€˜one of the 12 ministers of the Union Stateā€™ with full immunity from prosecution, and that’s it.
