Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Supreme Leader on international affairs, in an exclusive interview with a reporter from Tasnim News Agency, in response to a question about the recent action of US President Donald Trump regarding the so-called “Zangezur” corridor and his claim to lease this passage for 99 years, said: “Is the South Caucasus an ownerless area that Trump would lease? The Caucasus is one of the most sensitive geographical points in the world, and this passage will not become a corridor owned by Trump, but a cemetery for Trump’s mercenaries.”
Emphasizing Iran’s constant opposition to the formation of something called the Zangezur Corridor, he emphasized in explaining the reasons for Iran’s opposition that this corridor changes the geopolitical situation of the region, shifts borders, and is designed to disintegrate Armenia.
Referring to Iran’s firm actions in showing our country’s opposition to the launch of this conspiratorial corridor, the advisor to the Supreme Leader on international affairs said: “When Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan insisted on their demand to build this corridor, the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, under the command of Lieutenant General Shahid Bagheri (then Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces), conducted numerous exercises in northwest Iran, which demonstrated our country’s readiness and seriousness in preventing this action.”
Emphasizing that “renting a corridor by another country is a naive statement and Trump is being naive,” Velayati stated: “This claim, meaning Trump renting a corridor on this side of the world, is like someone going from this side of the world and renting the Panama Canal for himself! This is impossible and will not happen.”
Pointing out that “Trump, as always, makes flashy but meaningless statements,” he continued: “Trump thinks he is a real estate agent and wants to rent a land or region!”
**With or without Russia, we will prevent the security of the South Caucasus from being jeopardized.**
Emphasizing that the corridor plan, which would lead to the future division of Armenia, faces strong opposition from the Armenian people, the former Iranian foreign minister noted that no nation is willing or willing to divide its territory, even if their government unfortunately takes weak positions.
Referring to the positions of Mr. Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Velayati said that during his previous visit to Iran, he emphasized that he agreed with Iran’s position and opposed the construction of the corridor, given the clear and conspiratorial disadvantages of this plan.
Recalling the changes that the construction of the Zangezur Corridor will bring to Iran’s borders and will limit our country’s communication route in the north and northwest to Turkey, he stated: “By implementing this conspiracy, the security of the South Caucasus will be jeopardized, and accordingly, Iran has emphasized that it will move towards the security of the South Caucasus, whether with or without Russia, and of course, we believe that Russia is also strategically opposed to this corridor.”
I’m seeing an alarming rate of “zangezur corridor” being named everywhere. We need to get ahead of the optics and not let everyone report on a route through our region as “zangezur”.
What Armenia does or doesn’t do on its own territory is Armenia’s business. Whether we agree or disagree with these actions is our own business, so kindly go fuck yourself.
I am sick and tired of every single non-Armenian giving their opinion on what should be done or how things should be conducted on Armenian territory.
