I imagined it’s way more tilted towards flats. Interesting.

I’m guessing this is one of the reasons for the big housing shortage in Ireland?
I know everyone dreams about an actual house with a yard but if you wanna house more people on limited land, apartment blocks are the best solution.

If you take it in a vacuum, maybe it’s true. We have houses in this proportion to the population. However, the amount of people actually living in apartments is closer to 80%.

No way so many people live in private houses, really?

Ireland is at the top of the list for a reason. Most apartments, even the ones we’re currently building, will never be considered as a permanent ‘forever home’, because they usually don’t come with a car space, and we don’t have a public transport system to compensate – basically, at a certain point in your life you will absolutely need the convenience and freedom of a car, people know this and so they want a house.

Germany and Spain are the only major European countries that overwhelmingly prefer apartments. I personally find apartments way more convenient compared to houses. This obsession with having your yard is most an American thing.
I am surprised that Sweden and Poland are so high.

Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium have significantly more terraced (or row) houses than the other European countries.
I’ve just returned from a holiday in France, and my son even made a remark while we were driving through small towns: “It seems like everybody here lives in a detached house.” So, he noticed the big difference with the way the towns are built in the Netherlands.

I was surprised by Belgium then realised it probably considers herenhuizen (townhouses) as houses.
I’d say if you remove townhouses the number isn’t as large for people living in detached houses.

Flats in the UK tend to be small, cold and poorly build. They’re also an unwise financial investment as their value doesn’t increase anywhere as much as houses do.
I assume the countries at the top of this list are in a similar position.

This probably doesn’t account for houses converted to multiple individuals/flats.

Would imagine the UK is similar to Ireland which is part of the problem with the housing challenges.
Mass housing can only be multi-family units to be affordable at this time. Yet from what I see the UK and Ireland are just trying to build ”more of the same”. Solves nothing apart from ensuring developers get richer.

I don’t know where they got those numbers, but the numbers for France are off by a wide margin:

From the most reliable source: https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/8251576 :
45% are flats, 55% are individual houses.
