Bulgaria is a great place – lovely people, good food and a history going back 1,000s of years. I have Bulgarian friends and have been visiting regularly for many years. Mainly Plovdiv and S into the Rhodope Mountains. Occassional trips to the central Balkan Mountains.
Plovdiv is an ancient city and one-time capital of Bulgaria. The main shopping street follow the line of the Roman cursus. At one end, it has all been opened up to create a performance area. Higher up, is the old town, including a well preserved Roman theatre.
For me, one of the most fascinating places is the Thracian city of Perperikon, SE of Plovdiv. A hill top settlement for 1,000s of years. It has been claimed as the site of the Oracle of Dionysis, which is supposedly where Alexander the Great received a prophecy he would rule the world …
Very few tourists in Bulgaria, the biggest problem is corruption at many levels throughout the political system. Much of this seems to be in the hands of Italian maffias.
