It makes sense, but given that plenty of people seem to get slaps on the wrist even when their dogs kill people Im not exactly convinced it would make a lot of difference.

I signed the petition but also believe some responsibility lies at the feet of the owner. It still stands as a fact that if you allow your cat to free roam wherever it pleases, you are taking a risk with it’s life and health as you *cannot* ensure it’s safety.

But when cats kill local wildlife and endangered animals that’s not an offence?

I’m all for tougher punishments on the owners of untrained, out of control, and/or violent dogs, but it needs to be handled with nuance. In the situation in the article, it’s clear the men were at fault as the dog wasn’t on a leash. But what about if a cat climbs into a garden where a dog is running around? If you can’t train all cats not to attack small wildlife, can you really say that you can train all dogs to not kill cats? People seem to forget that despite being domesticated, dogs are still animals and we can’t always control them. That’s not to say we mustn’t do our very best, but sometimes even the most well behaved dogs can be unpredictable.

    5. Aren’t there sections on the Dangerous Dogs Act which cover this sort of thing?

We seem to be at a point where most lower level crime is barely being investigated or prosecuted to such a point people think there are no laws in place against such things. They then call for the authoritarians in government to introduce further restrictions, bans and laws to police the crime they are against which obviously the gestapo in charge are happy to enact.

I say this as a vegetarian and long time vegan before that; the more harm we can prevent coming to animals the better. But this seems like knee jerk reactionism to me given we have laws already in place which can be applied to such matters.

      Nonsense petition.

If you have a pet that you have basically no control over then you cannot pass laws for what it does when it’s out of your control.

      It’s already an offence.

This is the British quirk of always making duplicate laws.

I kinda agree with it. My best friend’s cat got killed by the neighbours dog and the neighbours just threw the cat in their bin and only told them when they were asking if anyone had seen their cat. And the neighbours didn’t get into trouble or anything

Owners should be responsible for their pets, but this should extend to all pets, not just dogs.

I can’t let my pets free in my garden because local cats will kill them. I have tried to cat proof my garden, but it’s impossible due neighbours (understandably) not wanting a tangle of wire and mesh on top of the fence.

Cool, if we make cats destroying wildlife an offence the owners are responsible for too.

Currently cats are basically considered wild animals so nobody is responsible for what they do or what happens to them

If you make dog owners responsible for what happens to your cat, you need to be responsible for what your cat does

Why is it not an option to make the actions of pets an extension of their owners(if a pet dog kills a person it’s manslaughter from the owner)?

    12. CuriousThylacine on

What happened to her cat already constitutes multiple offences.

    13. ManagementMain6978 on

      Hell no.

I’ve trained my dogs specially to attack cats upon entering the set boundary I’ve placed in order to protect birds which settle into the low hedges during nesting seasons in my garden and my back neighbours chickens. Frogs travelling across the garden during mating season. Never seen a cat owner take any type of responsibility for their cats killing poultry, wildlife or even other people’s pets.

Too many indulge their bloody cats killing birds when they’re bringing them home. All that is doing is rewarding bad behaviour but never seems to get questioned at all.

And to answer before I get a comment; no, my dogs do not attack cats outside the boundary. Thoroughly trained. There is a world of difference between owner which understands their animal and those which don’t. Always the latter we see shining in the media.

Cats arent a menace to wildlife in the UK you absolute cretins. Not everything that is true in other English speaking countries is true here. Cats have been in Britain for like 2000 years, they are a natural part of the wildlife here.
