So they’re already making a list of those to be “brought to account”.

      Yikes.

One can debate the merits of the agreement and the shrewdness of our negotiators, but what’s done and done. It’s ridiculous to coerce them into giving back land we just agreed to give to them.

Given half the point of this generous deal was to pull Mauritius away from China, backing out like this seems like a very good way of ensuring the base is re-leased to the Chinese. In any event I don’t see the US staying onboard in these circumstances if a Democrat is in office at the time.

Best case scenario is that the US takes over the lease and UK/US relations take a hit. I don’t see a Democratic president using force to hold the territory over the UK’s decision to skip out on rent, particularly since US foreign policy in Asia is (normally) “we don’t want to colonise you like China does”.

LOL the deal is done, you can’t then penalise the country for getting a good deal for itself. It wasn’t dishonest, was it?

Hopefully they cancel the whole fucking shambles if, and probably when, they get in

Then they can fuck right off

Ah, the Trump school of diplomacy, unsurprising considering Reform are copying everything else from him – hopefully his name is mud by 2029. And I imagine it’ll go even worse for us if Reform follow through on this promise if they get in power because we don’t have anywhere near the power of the US and have much less ability to weather being considered an erratic and unreliable dealmaker who could renege on agreements at any point.
