But but but mass immigration over the past twenty years…???

I have a genius idea should bring in construction workers from other countries to build houses!
I wonder where they’re going to live…

“Always more” won’t work for the rest of the century.
You can keep believing the economists or people from your main political parties, their delusions won’t manifest themselves into reality.
Prepare for local permaculture and low-tech.

import them from abroad so they can take the houses they just built..erm.

I bet there’s thousands of young people wanting to get into construction but can’t get a job because they lack the experience.

Further incentivising apprenticeships would be a good start. At the moment, you can employ a young apprentice under minimum wage, which seems to be the main benefit for the employer, especially small firms. There are grants, however they are £1000 across the year.
I know plenty of young lads that couldn’t get an apprenticeship in the trades and others that couldn’t afford to do an apprenticeship, as the wage is so low and they were better off working elsewhere.
If we truly want to tackle this issue, we need to pay apprentices appropriately and ensure that it is valuable for small employers.
It probably isn’t unique to the trades, but, more often than not, you train an apprentice and put 3 years into it minimum, then they go off on their own

They need new houses for people to live in as a priority above this. Importing people to insulate houses is doubly stupid.
Sounds like another Starmer/Miliband ideological policy that won’t deliver growth.
The vast cost of housing makes labour expensive.

Maybe recruit retired tradesmen to give and introduction to the trade, then set them up with on the job training, we could call them apprenticeships. Yeah, that has a nice ring.

I’m a “construction worker” where are all these magic jobs being advertised?

So offer free training to British youth so they can take up careers as bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, etc. Training is too expensive in this country.
You can’t keep importing skill, at some point you have to invest in your youth.

Unfortunately everyone was sent on Social Science degrees instead, so we can’t build any houses, we can adjust your aura to match your star sign tho

‘Warm Homes Plan’?
We’re on our 4th heatwave of the summer, any chance of a Cool Homes Plan?

Why not try to encourage the thousands of uni students getting into debt for a useless degree be offering a decent wage and training in different professions like plumbing, plastering and electrical work? There’s a lot of money to be made for people with skills in these areas. AI proof jobs. If I had kids who were not academically minded I would fully support them getting a good trade under their belt.

Don’t we have a load of people in hotels doing nothing? Maybe they could help?

Houses are diamonds.
If you hit the targets you lower your own potential profits by stretching it out you achieve higher returns on each build.
If the government wants more houses it need to buy a builder and force a race to the bottom.

I think schools need to teach a pre-trade course with universal skills; simple stuff like manual handling to using a tape measure or ‘measure twice cut once’.

Awesome. Lines up perfectly with the other thread about low numbers of job vacancies.
Our solution is to incentivise training and apprenticeships right? It’s not to add trades to the immigration allow list? As they have been previously (might still be).

Sorry it’s just something I’m passionate about. We always take on apprentices and it disappoints me to see them putting shit work out knowing I didn’t teach them that.
The industry needs a better image. Especially new housing. I deliver good homes and the ‘new builds are shit’ I take very personally!

The UK needs to reform its education system. A vocational system that only takes effect after years of learning about fluff isn’t helping anyone except the odd toff who wants to go and do a history of art degree.
Back in the 50s secondary school boys had the chance to do woodworking as a main subject pretty much every day and were leaving school as skilled carpenters able to make anything from the simple elegant dining table and chairs to being able to work in construction. I’m sure many young lads would like to do that instead of a humanities subject.
Young lads from places like Romania and Albania are coming here at 16 with the knowledge of a fully certified electrician, or could easily build a 5 bedroom house for themselves if you simply gave them the materials.
