Mel Gibson has spoken of his support for a united Ireland and recalled how he spent time in the country as a child at the beginning of the Troubles.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Sunday Times, the Hollywood actor and director, now 69, recounted how he visited Ireland in the late 1960s and witnessed some of the initial unrest that would mark the beginning of one of the darkest periods in modern Irish history.

Gibson said a united Ireland “would be nice” and believes younger generations are starting to see the senselessness of the lives lost during the decades-long conflict.

“When I was 12 years old I was here during the Troubles in about 1968. It was my first time here and I remember at the time there were riots and a lot of friction between the north and south,” he said from the King John Summer Prom festival in Trim, Co Meath.

“I remember all that back in the Sixties and of course it got much worse and then more serious. Then of course there were outside influences coming in, but Americans were aware of it. I was talking to [the Scottish actor] David O’Hara about that and he was saying there’s the same thing in Scotland, where they say it’s a religious difference but I think it’s more than that.

“But if everybody can be friends, what’s wrong with that? If they can manage it. I think the younger generations coming through are probably seeing the senselessness of having that friction.”

If Mel Gibson said that back in the day he would have been interned

      1. It’s not up to him.
      2. He’s fucking mental now.

I agree with him, but both countries are unrecognisable from 1968. (Except Ballymena, what a shithole).

Its behind a pay wall so can’t read it. For anyone who has, how did Gibson experience the start of the Troubles (allegedly)

He visited Trim (my town) the other day to celebrate Braveheart, and nobody I know had the slightest interest in meeting him. Racist weirdo.
