    Grazie!!!

      The six arrows that prevent us from devolving into irredeemable sons of bitches, if you read between the lines of course

      – On the arrows and the enemies:

      Republicanism kills the sultanate

      Populism kills the [IDK what the hell that is, pixel scarcity]

      Nationalism kills the bullies (invaders in this context)

      Statism kills ignorance

      Laicite kills backwardsness

      Reformism kills bigotry (imo fundamentalism in this context)

      Subtext; Karagöz — Hey gidi günler hey. Bir zamanlar ensemizde boza pişirenlerin bugünkü haline bakın !

      So, the bold text below the picture reads ‘The Six Arrows That Saved Us From Scourge’

      From left to right, the arrows read as:

      WE ARE REPUBLICIANS – ‘Monarchy’

      WE ARE DEMOCRATS – ‘Oppression’

      WE ARE NATIONALISTS – ‘Bullies’ (You can read here as tyrants or despots)

      WE ARE STATIST (PRO-STATE, the ideal of establishing a state) – ‘Ignorance’

      WE ARE SECULARISTS – ‘Retrogradation (retardation, etc.)

      WE ARE REVOLUTIONISTS – ‘Dogmatism’

      And the fore bottom text reads:

      ‘Karagöz (name) – Oh those days; Take a look at how the ones once breathed down our necks are doing today!

      It is from a magazine called “karagöz dergisi” specifically from 9th of may 1935.

      It says 6 arrow that saved us from 6 trouble.

      referring to 6 principles of kemalism, on the arrows from top the bottom it says
      we are; republicans, populists, nationalists, statists, laicists, reformists.

      on the guy’s ass, it says, sultanate, tegallüb (i dont know what the ecact translation would be, but it is about autoritarian power), opression, illiteracy, bigotry, taassub (i think that also can be translated as bigotry)

      on the smaller text at the bottom, from the mouth of karagöz;

      karagöz – ah, those old days, look at the situation of those who used to opress us.

      (there is a proverb there so it could be better translated)

      im pretty sure someone else with more turkish knowledge can translate better but this is close enough, so it shouldnt be a problem.

      The main sentence in bold is “The six arrows that saved us from six dooms/curses/misfortunes/sickness”. On each arrow it writes, “we’re republican” which aims at “sultanate”, “we’re populist (different than the modern political terminology ig)” which aims at [couldn’t read], “we’re nationalist” which aims at “bullying” (maybe bullying of imperialism), “we’re statist” which aims at “ignorance (?)”, “we’re secular” which aims at “traditionalism/conservatism/reactionarism”, “we’re revolutionists” which aims at “bigotry”.

      “The six arrows that saves us from six plagues.”
      Arrows, clockwise:
      “Republicanism->Sultanate

      Populism->Dictatorship
      (In Kemalism this isn’t the populism in the western sense)

      Nationalism->Bullying

      (Can’t quite understand what “zorbalık” meant here, likely something about other nations not being able to force something upon us.)

      Etatism->Ignorance
      Laicite->Backwardness(literally the word for islamist reactionaries(backwardist) in turkey)

      Reformism->Radicalism

      (in any sense. Here, it’s depicted as an Imam, likely refering to islamist radicalism)

      Cumhuriyetçiyiz attacks Saltanat. Halkçıyız attacks Tegallüb. Milliyetçiyiz attacks Zorbalık. Devletçiyiz attacks Cehalet. Lavikiz attacks Gericilik. İnkılapçıyız attacks Taassub

      These are 6 pillars of m. kemal’s people’s party

      The Six Arrows is the symbol and flag of the Turkish Republican People’s Party (CHP). The arrows represent the fundamental pillars of Kemalism, Turkey’s founding ideology. These are republicanism, populism, nationalism, laicism, statism, and reformism. Translation of the picture goes like:

      —————————–

      Cumhuriyetçiyiz > Saltanat (We are republicans > Sultanate)

      Halkçıyız > Tegallüb (We are populists > Oppression)

      Milliyetçiyiz > Zorbalık (We are nationalists > Tyranny)

      Devletçiyiz > Cehalet (We are statists > Ignorance)

      Laikiz > Gerilik (We are seculars > Reactionism)

      İnkılapçıyız > Taassub (We are reformists > Bigotry)

      The Six Arrows that save us from six plagues.

      Karagöz* – “Oh my days! Look at the current state of those who used to breathe down on our necks”

      —————————-

      *Karagöz and Hacivat are the lead characters of the traditional Turkish shadow play and this picture was published on Karagöz Magazine.

      It says on the bottom, 6 Arrows that save us from 6 Troubles. Subtext is “Karagöz (indicating the character is speaking): look at people who abused us in the past what situation they are in. This is more said in a proverb way “Ensesinde Boza Pişirmek”.

      Arrows are:

      * We are Republican -Against Monarchy
      * We are Democrat/Social/Popular – Against Domination, (old Ottoman Tegallüb)
      * We Patriotic – Against Bullying (kind of but is means more social scale king of WW1 French Revolution context)

      * We are Laik (Secular but kind of different it is Laicite) – Against Backwardness

      * We are Revolutionary – Against Taasub ( old Ottoman means kind of Fanaticsm especially religious sense a bit but it is in this context progress)
