Why are we giving non UK nationals benefits in the first place? Because in any other country, you lose your job you’ve lost your visa and you’re kicked out.

2021 census says there’s 4.1 million EU citizens with settled status in the UK resulting in an unemployment rate of around 19% for this grouping.

    3. Misleading headline, as it equates ‘Universal Credit’ with being unemployed.

Those are not the same. Two thirds of people claiming universal credit are actually in work.

    4. badgerandcheese on

Of course it had to be GB News.

Universal Credit doesn’t necessarily mean unemployed.

    5. No one bar an actual citizen should have access to UC. In any other country if you can’t pay for yourself, you’re out.

My wife’s from Africa. Came here the right way, paid the extortionate uni prices, waited in the (very long) queue and got residency. In the wider African community she’s part of she often comments to me how the government is seen as a joke and the system is not to be listened to but to be gamed. It infuriates her as someone who did it the right way and its quite funny to see her go off on illegal immigrants to the white leftists as they can’t throw back the usual ‘you’re just racist’ to her. Really exposes their lack of ability to defend their position.

Do they just mean immigrants who got ILR? regardless it’s gross to think about

The vast majority of these are EU citizens settled here before Brexit where their rights were expressly maintained, as were the rights of Brits living in the EU

Universal credit shouldn’t be topping up wages for a start, it’s essentially the government subsidising poor-paying employers’ profits.

Migrants shouldn’t be working in these jobs as they absolutely will not be skilled jobs. Unemployed people already living here should be coaxed into these jobs.

Migrants absolutely shouldn’t be receiving benefits as that money could be better spent elsewhere (NHS, education, police, transport, employment schemes etc.).

Additionally, many migrants send remittance payments back to their home countries – this is money that is being directly extracted from the British economy and redirected to other countries’ economies.

A true triple whammy of making the nation poorer and further imperilling the country’s finances.

Why is this supposed to be news?
There are around 8 million people in the UK who claim universal credit, 1.3 million of which are not British citizens.
16% of the UK population are non-UK nationals, so this number is to be expected

This constant anti-immigrant rhetoric needs to stop, it does not help anyone except Reform Uk who want to win the next election using hate, fear and division.

The bigger problem is the job market and the fact that so many are claiming benefits, regardless of nationality

The usual rage bait headlines getting the pensioners all riled up.

This country is so going to vote for that farage muppet.

    13. Roundkittykat on

These are two separate things. One can be employed and receive universal credit – or unemployed and not claim universal credit.

Unlike UK citizens, many foreign nationals can only claim universal credit if they’re *in work*

This UK taxpayers are being taking for another ride

    15. Objective_Try8133 on

I think it’s clear from the comments here that firstly a lot of you haven’t read the article and secondly have a poor understanding of how visas work.

    16. No_Assistance_14 on

Very simply, if you cannot stand on your own two feet as an immigrant you should be deported. That number should be 0. Non-UK citizens should be allowed to absolutely no benefits whatsoever, this is utterly ludicrous

    17. Fucking hell GBnews guys. We’ve fallen pretty far in the last year. They’re not even a news source by their own definition.

    18. 1-Xander-1 on

so 16% of the 8 million on uc are foreign. i personally dont care what nationality. what matters more is whether they have worked, paid their taxes, and been honest, law-abiding and productive individuals.

plenty of our native populace on UC dont do any of those things.

I can imagine this is a well vetted and robust statistic with no way that the title is misleading in any way…

Why in the ever-loving-fuck is GB News even allowed to be posted here. Like seriously. It’s bad enough that the Daily Mail and Telegraph are permitted, but, at the very least, they pretend to be factual sources of information. GB News is just an organisation of straight-up bullshit merchants, and that’s not uncommon knowledge. This headline, for example, is just a complete and utter lie. Not a half-truth, not a twisting of words, just an actual, outright lie. Why is this allowed?

    22. knowledgewarrior2018 on

1.3m is still way too many. I have lived abroad before and if you dont have the means to support yourself you are out – no questions asked. This is nonsense, no serious country would ever let itself get to this point.

    23. GenerallyDull on

If you are from another country and cannot sustain yourself – you should return to your home country.
