Finland should implement secularity policy, similar to France. They won’t however because they need to defend Christianity which is inane.

I also cant wear a full face helmet into school. Why should you be able to wear a burka or niqab?

You can easily cheat your ways to exams and it also has a lot of safety risks, you dont know who/what is under a niqab

i hope this ban expands to all religious clothing / attributes.

They’re not suitable for anywhere outside the Middle East and North Africa

Perhaps I will be stoned to death by having this opinion – but as a Finn I agree that face should not be covered in a school setting. Or in our society as a whole at all. Covering the face goes against everything Finnish culture is.

They are not suitable for an equal and fair society.

To be honest it’s their country and if you want things a certain way you must move to a country with those customs rather than moving and attempting to change their customs. Our Europeans countries are beautiful and should remain what they are regardless of who comes

Burqa’s and Niqab are not suitable for Western civilisation.

Religion is fine, using religion to powertrip on women and only women is not.

Good. You want sharia law, go to a country that has them and enjoy. Don’t contaminate secular democracies with it

They generally do not belong in Europe. But school is a good place to start

    11. It’s not problem if they want to practice Islam at home !!! But stop showing it off, trying to influence European societies!! We don’t want it!!! If you feel discriminated because you can’t wear your “religious hat” at school, you can always go back to Middle East! Thank you for attention

Don’t like it, leave the country and go somewhere that fits your needs.

When i went to school we were not allowed to have those t shirts without sleeves for boys, we were not allowed to have shorts above knees, to wear hats during class, girls were not allowed to have too short dresses, leggings, shorts, or naked shoulders. It was not part of religion but part of culture and what was considered appropriate.

Same thing here. This is Finnish culture. Respect it or leave.

They are not suitable anywhere in the West, plain simple.

I knew a lot of Muslim women who grew up wearing the hijab. As soon as they gained financial independence, they never put that thing on again.

It’s not voluntary, we all know it. These women and girls would be attacked by their communities if they tried to integrate.

I’m a leftist. I’m really agajnst burkas and niqabs in europe. It’s beautifull that we have so many culture, I actually think that, but for these culture to co-exist, we also have to defend these culture from each other. I don’t think that any country in europe should legitimaze anything beside Hijab.

I’ve seen my share of this conversation and, oh boy, do people miss the mark so often.

One has to remember that Finland has an established state churches (Evangelical lutheran and orthodox) and that combines christianity into school and state issues. Trying to escape religion in school is hard, even for native non-religious students.

Now add up different religion and habits to the mix with some people worrying for equality among men/women, the autonomy of the female, school policies on face recognition and the basic fear of the culture and it’s differences.

Everybody making their point on different grounds. You’d need to be VERY clear about “why” and what your argument would mean for everyone when making a nation-wide policy.

Schools should be secular institutions. We are no longer in the medieval era where religion was responsible of educating people. Therefore, I support the ban of all visible religious symbols from schools, regardless of their nature.

I agree with no face covering in class (for practical and social reasons) but people in this thread defending state religion (because it happens to be Christianity in this case) are equally as wrong. Religion should simply not be used as the basis to dictate what people can and cannot wear.

    20. be_sugary on

Absolutely agree. Faces shouldn’t be covered. Hair covering isn’t so intrusive but I feel all religious icons etc should be left in the home.

    21. wolfhound_doge on

this should be made into an universal EU law across all member states and we should include other religious shit (incl. christianity) spilling over into public institutions.
