This shouldn’t be allowed. All the cultural arguments, this isn’t culture. This is cruelty. I am the first generation of my family not to own a horse. I feel no entitlement to one because of my family history, Horse ownership is not a right. No more horses in housing estates, no more racing on public roads, if you want to race build a track, insure the place and the activity and pay the money for it. If you do not have the money or resources to own a horse you can’t have one. It’s time this society started saying no to people instead of accommodating this bullshit.

Just like the million other times *something had to be done* around law and order issues in this country. This will be forgotten about in a day or two and we’ll be reading a similar news report in a few months

Either our police start acting on this stuff properly now or they don’t. Simple as.

Brazen mockery of the law by doing this on motorways and busy roads. It’s not even a case of some underground thing they need to investigate. They are recording it and posting it online.
I’d be in favour of having a dedicated Ireland wide unit for this though. I think local guards are intimidated to take action. They 100% know who this is and where those horses are based, should just rock up with some horse trucks and take every single horse off them. Then charged them with animal cruelty.
As always though they are waiting for some innocent 3rd party to die in a traffic accident caused by this to take any action.

It’s mad how frequently these videos go viral and nothing is done about them

Incredibly sad footage. Do the leaders of these minorities not issue statements as to how shocked they are….nope. They just honestly don’t care

What happens to horses that are just put in housing estates? There’s one in D11, tied in a grassy area, has water but just standing in the sun, no shade?

The level of disrespect is crazy behaving like this at funerals. Why did we start celebrating and promoting thug culture

This isn’t really a “culture” thing at all, because it would still be “tolerated” regardless of who was doing it.
As *My Lovely Horse* point out, this is ultimately an enforcement issue, which itself is a reflection of just how shite Ireland is at animal welfare. We just don’t care.
There are disparate groups with various types of responsibility for different animals, and they’re all massively underfunded and understaffed. As a result, nothing of any real value gets done.
Ultimately we need one national body with authority on this, and they could begin by taking a statutory position over rescue organisations, maybe even taking control of the SPCAs, etc., as well as taking charge of the animal control units in various county councils.
Back them up with a dedicated Garda unit. At the moment it’s a case of “send Garda Murphy over to deal with it, she has experience with animals”.
Throw some real balls and teeth at this thing or it’s never going to get solved.

I see this kind of animal abuse regularly in Dublin. Such scumbags they are.

I saw 42 sulkies in a row trotting past me at a crossroads in Kimmage a month or so ago. This cruel practice should be stamped out with force. Trotting should *never* be done on tarmac, only on grass.

Riding horses on (non-motorway) roads is still legal. I don’t see anything in the thejournal article that indicates any crime was committed. I don’t know why commenters here are calling it a law & order issue.
Are you sure you’re not getting judgemental about this road traffic accident because you can’t imagine yourself personally crashing a horse and trap?
