Because his opinions were fucking stupid.
“It’s not worth putting in Metrolink because there’s no parking in Stephen’s Green” being a particularly fine example.

>My criticism of the MetroLink is based on the fact, that very few passengers at Dublin Airport will ever use it.
>It takes passengers into St Stephen’s Green, so some small minority of inbound visitors might use it, but the vast majority of Irish originating passengers, who need to get to Dublin Airport early in the morning, or are travelling to/from outside the D2 / D4 area, won’t use it.
>Dublin Airport is just 9km from the centre of the city, and is well served by competitively priced bus connections, which takes passengers to the city centre, and to points all over Ireland at low fares. These passengers won’t switch to a €20 billion metro.

I wonder when it was, the last time O’Leary was stuck in traffic?
Should be noted he simply doubled down on his & Desmond’s assertion that AI was going to somehow solve Dulbin’s traffic & commuting problems.
Rich and wrong indeed.

There’s always an excuse not to invest in public goods, I remember when business & finance had a front page calling the DART a “white elephant” and comparing it to Knock Airport.

The fact that since his radio interview, multiple sources have said that the metro is not being built to primarily serve the airport , and he still leads with this shows how out of touch he is.

Says a guy who bought a taxi plate so that he could use the bus lanes. Metrolink isn’t just about a rail link to the airport. It’s about connectivity, something you’d think he’d be a world expert in, given his role. A metro link would help with planning new towns and urban settlements and housing along the route, it will help create new businesses as well like little shops at the stations etc.
The fact we are the only so called rich developed country without any metro link is astonishing. The longer we talk about it the more expensive it becomes. We need to just build it already.
FineVintageWino on
The biggest problem with the whole metro for Dublin is that it is simply not ambitious enough. If we spent on rail as the Dutch do, we’d quickly realise what a small country we live in, and regional imbalances would quickly dissipate.

Would love it if some middle aged Irish multimillionaire would come out and say something productive or ambitious about the metrolink project, you know, like building a line that connects it to Heuston Station which is the only rail access point to Dublin from Munster and Connacht. But no. We have O’Leary who flogs car parking spaces through Ryanair and Dermot Desmond who has probably invested in self driving cars shouting at clouds.

AI robo taxies will never been a solution to mass transit because the will suffer from the same issue as personal cars, traffic. AI robo taxies will probably make traffic even worse because whey will often be driving empty to pick people up.

Worth remembering that this self-proclaimed expert turned up at the opening of Terminal 2 dressed as an undertaker followed by pallbearers carrying a coffin because the project was “dead on arrival”. The same fellow who now claims that passenger caps are too low.
He’s not a transport expert; he’s not an infrastructure expert; he’s even self-evidently not an expert on airports which one would assume he would be. He’s good at penny pinching and marketing – his opinion on anything beyond that is usually wrong. But paper never refused ink, so we have to keep hearing what Michael O’Leary has to say about just about anything in this country till the day he dies.

Why are we even giving Michael O’ Leary any time at all. ?
He’s a leech his only concern is how he can part you from your money, and he’s insidious in his methods.O’ Leary once said and by all accounts still stands on this ,that he would do away with welfare payments. His reasoning for this is not to save the country money. He thinks people are lazy on welfare and doesn’t believe that “not everyone is capable of pulling their bootstraps up.” The other reason is that he thinks he can exploit that by getting people to work for him for buttons. His expertise is in air transport, and he should stick to that, throwing ideas that people don’t want the Metro is his idea, but how would he know that.? If the Metro was a private enterprise, O’Leary and his ilk would be in on it and want two. Another authoritarian who gives in to his avarice reflexes when he sees the chance of exploiting the ordinary people.

The only valuable paragraph in the article. We should de-platform people like Michael O’Leary, unless he is filing his company returns. No one person who is not an elected official or public servant should get this much airtime to air their every thought. I’m sure he has a twitter account.
The papers need to step up here too.

The whole point of Metrolink is getting Swords, Ballymun and Glasnevin a rail transport option. These massively populated areas along with rest of the LUAS and dart+ netword will all be interchangeable in Glasnevin. It will transform Dublin into a modern city with an actually transport network from the 21st century. The fact you will also be able to go to the airport is just a nice bonus, its not the point of Metrolink…..
